New Breakthrough Basketball Stats App for iPad

We recently released our brand new Breakthrough Stats App for iPad.

iPhone capability is coming soon!

Did you see the frenzy?

On Thursday, the Breakthrough Stats App sky-rocketed up to #2 on the Top Paid Apps list for the Sports category in the iTunes store. Thank you for contributing to this and creating the huge buzz.  We are truly humbled.

We also received some great instant feedback and one person wrote…

“I like the advanced stats that only you provide and the simple user interface. It is a great value for the app. Others are around $20 or more.”

More information on the Stats App

The app is designed for coaches, parents, and statisticians. It will allow you to…

  • Track LIVE stats during a game.
  • View key game stats after each quarter and at half time (effective field goal %, field goal attempts, free throw %, free throw attempts, turnovers, offensive reb %, etc).
  • Make objective adjustments during the game and get an edge on the competition.
  • Instantly calculate over 65 basketball statistics that would be almost impossible to do without automation — paint attempts, lay up %, EFG%, bad passes, player efficiency, and many more.
  • Export statistics reports to PDF, Excel, CSV (for PC or Mac).
  • Get critical stats that other apps are lacking.
  • Easily create clean looking shot charts and track lay ups.
  • Easily calculate your season totals — just a couple taps. This saves lots of time because the old fashioned method takes hours.
  • Easily look up the stats for past games and keep all your stats in one easy to use place.
  • And much more

  1. I have downloaded it on my wife’s i pad. i now have another i pad. can i download the program on my new ipad?

  2. Gene,

This is really an Apple issue. However, I know that if you use the same Apple account name on both iPad’s you can load the second one for free. Just try it. If they are different Apple accounts, I’m not sure if it’s possible to download to a second iPad without paying for it.

  3. Daniel,

The iPhone version is in final development stages. We hope to have it soon, but I can’t give you an exact date.

  4. Brian,

I have successfully used the +/- function so I’m not sure what might be wrong. Basically, the way it works is that whenever there is a substitution it notes the score at that time and then notes the score when that player leaves the game. The +/- is then determined by how much the score has changed to the better (+) or worse (-) for his team between the time the player entered and left the game. You might try it again. If you still have the problem use the Export function in Reports to email both the Game Statistics Report and the Play by Play Report. Send them to “AppSupport” email address. (I did not include the full email to discourage the harvesting of email addresses for spam. Just add the @ symbol followed breakthroughbasketball.com to the name provided.)

Note that if you have any type of problem with the app you should use the Contact button in About in the app to send an email to support. It will likely get processed faster there.

  5. The app will not let me generate any reports. It takes me to the screen to register myself as a coach but will not let me access the server ( I am connected via wifi and safari lets me go to your website) please help

  6. This sometimes happens when you first try to register. Follow the instructions below and it will let you register and run your reports.

By the way, you can send an email directly to support by tapping the Contact button in About within the app.

Here’s the instructions for letting you register:

Do this if you have IOS6 or earlier. If you have IOS7, see below:
    1. Go into the stats app.
    2. Press the Home button on the iPad.
    3. Press the Home button twice in succession on the iPad. You should see a list of tasks on the bottom.
    4. Find the BreakthruStats icon in the list of tasks.
    5. Press and hold the BreakthruStats icon until it wiggles.
    6. Press the “-” sign at the upper left of the BreakthruStats icon. This will close the app and remove it from memory, but won’t delete the app.
    7. Press the Home button on the iPad. The icons should stop wiggling.
    8. Press the Home button again.
    9. Find the BreakthrouStats icon and tap on it to relaunch the app.
    10. Try running a report again.

Do this if you have IOS7.
    1. Go into the stats app.
    2. Press the Home button on the iPad.
    3. Press the Home button twice in succession on the iPad. You should see a list of tasks on the bottom.
    4. Find the BreakthruStats icon in the list of tasks.
    5. Above the icon find a screen that shows the actual app.
    6. With your finger slide the screen off the top of the screen. It should disappear. This will close the app and remove it from memory, but won’t delete the app.
    7. Press the Home button on the iPad.
    8. Find the BreakthrouStats icon and tap on it to relaunch the app.
    9. Try running a report again.

  7. I bought this today hopping to use it at the game tonight. I can’t get it to register I’ve tried all the suggestions above.

  8. Vance,
I’ve never seen these steps fail. Can you give us the exact message you are seeing. In the meantime, please try the recommended steps again.

By the way, it is easier to keep in touch with you if you use the Contact button in About in the app. So, I recommend using that if you are having problems.

If re-trying the recommended steps still doesn’t work, Apple has several suggestions for clearing memory and resetting the iPad. They are included below. Try them and then try registering the app again. Note that you can still collect your stats without registering while we try to sort out your problem.

Clear Memory: Double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar along the bottom. It will show all the apps that you have opened at one time or another. Press one of these apps until they start to jiggle and red minus signs will appear above them all. Press all the minus signs, this will close them, not delete them. It’s a good idea to do this regularly just to keep them all running smoothly.

Restart: Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple Logo appears, this will take a few seconds and your iPad will start again. You should restart your iPad occasionally also as it will keep it running smoothly.

Reset: Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start.

  9. I really like the program and I am happy to use it. I have run into a few complications I need help fixing. In my multi-game report it gives me a lot of players who DID NOT PLAY so all their statistics are 0.0 or 0.0% can I eliminate the players who do not play from that report?

Secondly, I have a player who is on the roster. He did not play the first game. He did play the second game and scored 13 points. He did play the third game and scored 22 points. The three game multi-game report does not list the number of games nor the number of total minutes played by each player. Also the average for this player who totals 35 point for two games should be 17.5 ppg. But the program is dividing his 35 points by 3 games so it reads his average as 11.7.

    How can I fix this??

    Thank you …

    Ed Phillips

  10. Edwin,

There is no way to remove players from the multi-game report. We will add your request to our enhancements list. You can export and email the report in the CSV format and open it in a spreadsheet such as Excel and then remove those players.

The number of games played is on our enhancement list and is something we plan on adding in the future. In the meantime, you could use the spreadsheet approach for this issue, too.

As for the minutes played, you should see them in the multi-game reports. Are you saying you don’t see them for any players? Are you seeing minutes played in single game reports?

  11. I started using this app mid way through our girls basketball season to help my players recognize the quality of their shots. I find I can do a great job keeping up

  12. With the game when I don’t track every stat. Is there a way to remove or rearrange the buttons to make it easier to track the desired stats?

  13. Robert,

There is no way to remove or rearrange the buttons. It is something we have considered and think would be useful. However, we have not made a decision to add that feature yet. We will add your suggestion to our request list.

  14. Hey, Clayton,

I answered your question in App Support, but I thought I should answer here too so other can see it.

The new version that we are testing right now has the ability to email the shot chart so it can be printed. It also has some other enhancements like the ability to view or email the shot chart for individual players as well as the entire team. In addition there will be the ability to analyze shots with something called The Shot Zone Report. I can’t give you an exact date for the release of the update, but barring an unforeseen problem, it should be available in the next 2 months.

  15. Hi I’m interested in downloading this app and have been through the 5 tutorials I could find on-line… but the one function I want to confirm it has before I go ahead is I’m hoping that after a “made” shot there is a prompt asking for who to credit for the assist …after a missed shot a prompt for the Offensive or Defensive rebound etc.

Is this something that can be adjusted in the “Set-up”

  16. Shanna,
We don’t have those 2 features. We made a careful analysis when we designed the app and decided not to do what you are asking. There were some complaints by users of other apps that those automatic prompts were annoying and disruptive. For example, when a shot is made if it prompts you for an assist and there was no assist then there is an extra step to ignore the prompt.
Having said that, it would make sense to allow these types of prompts as a setup feature and we will add your request to our enhancement list, but we can’t promise when or if it will be done.
Note that there is a new release in the works and it will have some great features added. For example, see the post before yours regarding the Shot Chart and Shot Zone Report.
We think you will like our stats app a lot so we encourage you to download it.

  17. Everything was working great with the reports and exporting until the last two games we just played this summer and it will not export the reports. The process looks like it completed but the emails never show up. I’ve checked spam and even tried using a different email address for the app. Neither have yielded success. Suggestions? Thanks!

  18. Jason,
Here are a couple of things to try.

First, make sure you are running the latest version of our app. It is version 1.2.1. You can check the version number by going to the About screen in the app. The version appears in the upper left corner. If you don’t have version 1.2.1 installed, please install the update then try exporting again.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, try doing a restart on your ipad. To do that, press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slider appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again and hold until the Apple Logo appears. This will take a few seconds and your iPad will start again. You should restart your iPad occasionally as it will keep it running smoothly.

Third, when we’ve seen this problem it has been because there is some issue with Mail on the iPad. You’re email account needs to be set up and working in the Mail that Apple provides on the iPad. If you haven’t set it up, you should do that. If you have set it up, then see if you can send an email from Mail to yourself. Note that you have to set up the Mail account even if you normally use a browser for your email like if you use Gmail.

To set up a Mail account:
Find the Settings icon on your iPad and tap it.
    Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
On the right, select Add Account.
Follow the instructions to set up the email account that you normally use.

Please let us know if you continue to have a problem. By the way, it may be easier to let us know of problems by using the Contact button on the About screen in the app. That way the issue goes directly to the support team. Thanks.
