Basketball Zone Plays - Dynamic Zone Offense Plays Against Any Zone Defense

Home > Coaching > Basketball Plays > Basketball Zone Plays - Dynamic Zone Offense Plays Against Any Zone Defense
Zone defenses can cause many headaches for coaches. While it is important to teach your players how to play against a zone defense, it's also very important to have a few zone plays in your back pocket to help you beat any zone defense.

We believe that teaching zone principles will help you the most in the long-run and need to be emphasized. However, there are definitely times during games where you just need a zone play to get a good look at the basket. Some coaches also prefer to use their best zone plays when they first see a zone defense during a game. The rationale is that if they execute a couple of zone plays right from the beginning, the opposing coach may quickly pull their team out of the zone defense.

Zone Plays Against 2-3 Zones, 3-2 Zones, and 1-3-1 Zones

Double - Great zone play that can be executed against a 2-3 zone, a 3-2 zone, and even a 1-3-1 zone defense.

Overload - Very simple zone play that is effective against all zone defenses.

Overload 2 - This is a variation of the Overload zone play to help you get more easy buckets.

Pitt - This is a great zone play to use against 2-3 zone defenses. Jamie Dixon popularized this play to beat Syracuse's zone defense.

Shallow - This is a simple, yet effective zone play that is most useful against a 2-3 zone defense, but can also be used against other defenses.

Quick Hitter Vs. 1-3-1 Zone - This is a great play to use against a 1-3-1 zone defense.

Cincy - This is a great zone play and it can also be adapted to use against man to man defenses.

Overload 2 could also be used as a motion offense vs a zone defense.

I just made the basketball team at school and I was looking for some plays to share with my coach and teammates. These are exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks. My favorite is the overload 2. It really works.
