5 Things to Consider When Mounting A Basketball Hoop On Your Garage

Home > Guide to Hoops / Goals > 5 Things to Consider When Mounting A Basketball Hoop On Your Garage

Mounting a basketball hoop on a garage wall can be an inexpensive and quick way to practice the game you love at home.

Not everyone has the space to install a full inground basketball hoop, and even if you get one installed in limited space, it may only cause you problems.

Anyone can get a basketball hoop installed up on their garage in little or no time.

However, there are a few things to consider before you do it...

1. Windows in the garage door

If your hoop is installed in an area with a window, or plenty of windows, chances are that you might smash one of them while shooting free throws.

There is a high probability that might happen. Therefore, it is important to consider the location before you mount the hoop.

You have already spent quite a lot on the basketball system, and you would not want to spend more on damage repairs.

2. Potential panel damage to the garage door

If mounting to the front of your garage, there is a high probability that your garage door suffers damage from low/missed shots if the basketball hoop is installed above it.

It is almost impossible to stop the ball from hitting the garage door. The damages that can occur include paint chipping off, dented panels and windows breaking.

Damage to nearby aluminum and vinyl siding, outdoor lighting, gutters, and nearby vehicles surrounding your home is also possible.

3. Garage wall integrity

If you want to practice at a high-level, love showing off your fancy moves, and love to dunk, you will need a basketball hoop with a strong base.

To mount a hoop on a garage, the most important thing is to check if the surface is solid. It must be strong enough to handle and withstand physical pressure.

Make sure the surface is flat and away from the roof line. A flat surface helps make sure that the backboard is firmly attached to the wall.

Another thing to watch out for is that walls can contain electrical wires and other unseen hazards and obstacles. It is the installer's responsibility to locate and avoid these hazards during installation.

It is recommended to consult a professional architect or contractor to determine a safe wall anchoring system to match the wall construction being used in your application.

4. Having enough playing space

Playing space is an important factor when mounting a basketball hoop on your garage. Having a good amount of space is ideal to play well.

Single car driveways are often 9-12 feet wide. You might have decent space to shoot close shots and have some fun, but the space would not be enough for you to move like you would in a 5v5 game.

Two or three car driveways are double the width of single car driveways and thus provide quite a lot of space to play.

The wider the playing space, the better the experience.

5. Siding damage/replacement if you take it down

If you ever decide to un-mount and move a basketball hoop from your garage, you must do it with care, or it can damage your garage sidings. Careless removal of a basketball hoop can also cause damage to the walls.

It is therefore recommended to use additional protection on your sidings, walls and garage doors to avoid damages.

6. Vehicles backing out of driveway do not strike backboard or rim

Adjustable wall mount hoops come with quite a lot of advantages over fixed height wall mounts. You can adjust their height so the rim can get low enough for children to make shots and be strong enough for adults to dunk in.

But there are some important things to consider if you are installing an adjustable rim on your garage wall.

If your wall-mount hoop is installed on a driveway, it must not obstruct the entry or exit of vehicles even with a maximum overhang of 5.75 feet.

However, if the hoop does obstruct the driveway with a maximum overhang, you must adjust it to a level that does not obstruct the garage door for vehicles to move about freely.

You would not want to get yourself into unnecessary trouble.

Bonus Tips

  1. Always double check that your backboard system is for a garage or all mount. Some hoops are for poles only.
  2. You might be tempted to fasten the hoop with simple screwing and drilling, but it's HIGHLY recommended to use studs for greater stability.
  3. During installation, it is always good to have a few helpers because the materials are heavy and working on your own can cause injuries.
  4. Make sure all parts of the setup are firmly attached together, or the setup will be loose which will cause the ball to bounce in odd directions.
  5. Always keep in mind the space you have at home, and how much you need. For reference, regulation court length is 84 by 50 feet, while professional court length is 94 by 50 feet.
  6. Make sure the goal is at least 20 ft. (7 m) from any overhead power lines.
