I am having a debate with my two son on tactic when driving the lane for a layup
Should you concentrate on drawing contact or making the layup?
Concentrate on making the layup or getting fouled

I like to use the philosophy of "Finish through the defense." You're not looking to create contact but if it comes, you're prepared.
Don Kelbick's does a good job of explaining it on the video in this article:

We tell our players the number one goal when driving to make a lay-up is to make the lay-up. Expect contact, it will happen and don't think the refs will rescue you by calling a foul. I see a lot of players drive to the basket, get some contact and throw up a shot that has no chance of making it. The ref doesn't call a foul, it's a turnover.
The video Joe suggested is excellent.
