Mario Chalmers' Game Saving Shot Extended
If you are a Memphis Tigers fan, I apologize for bringing up a bad memory. If you are a college basketball fan, there is a good chance you remember Mario Chalmers′ three-point shot to send the 2008 NCAA Championship into overtime. That play was run in the full court, but the same idea can be applied in a half court set. And let′s take it one step further and draw up a second option just in case your shooter isn′t immediately open.
Step 1
The 1 man dribbles the ball hard at the 3.
At the same time your 3 moves toward the 1.
The 2 man drifts away from the ball to create space.
As the 1 gets within arm′s length of the 3, he turns his back to the basket and hands the ball off to the 3.
The 3 man cuts right off the 1, using his teammate as a screen, immediately looking for his shot.
Step 2
Ideally, step one will lead to a made three-pointer but that isn′t always the case. If the defense prevents a quick shot, the play can still continue and lead to an open look for another player.
When the 3 man doesn′t get his shot off, he should move to the foul line, keeping his dribble.
Your 4 man will then set a back pick for the 5, who will cut across the lane and set up on the low block.
At the same time, the 1 will down screen for the 4 who will curl up to the elbow once he has set the screen for the 5.
Step 3
The 3 man now has the ball at the foul line and has 4 options.
He can still look for his shot by pulling up or taking the ball to the basket.
He can pass to the 2 man who has drifted to the right side.
He can dump the ball down to the 5 who has posted up on the right block.
Or he can pass to the 4 man who is curling off a down screen from the 1.
Kansas had the luxury of using step one to perfection which resulted in a National Championship. Keep this play in mind when you need a quick look from three, but don′t give up on it if step one falls through.
