4 Magic Words To Get More Open Shots
(Post Players and Guards)

In this video clip from the Attack & Counter Skill Development System, Don Kelbick teaches you...

  • How to get open no matter how the defense plays you.
  • The “4 magic words” that will help you get open and get more shots.

How to get open no matter how the defense plays you

As Don mentions in the video….

“If your man is playing you low, take him low and beat him high.”

“If your man is playing you high, take him high and beat him low.”

This takes the defender even further out of position. This creates a bigger passing lane to receive more passes. And this leads to more high-percentage scoring opportunities.

4 Magic words to get more open shots

Don also reveals his 4 magic words for getting more open shots….

“Inside Shoulder, Inside Hip”.

Your goal is to get your inside shoulder and inside hip between the defender and the ball. This puts the defender on your backside.

Either, you are open immediately or you will be open when you cut to a new spot.

Implementing these two tips will reduce turnovers and get you more open scoring opportunities.

Isn't this an example of 'reading the defense', which Don supposedly doesn't support?

Great question, TJ!

This is just my take. I've been using the system with my players for about ten years now.

Don might tell you something slightly different.

The phrase "Don't read the defense" normally refers to individual offense.

Every time I have heard Don say "don't read the defense", it's been relative to the player with the ball.

In this situation, the player does not have the ball in this situation. He is moving without the ball.

Additionally, the biggest difference I see between what Don teaches and what has been traditionally taught in regards to reading the defense....

Don places more importance on attacking immediately over making the right read or as I prefer to say... making the right counter.

It's a different mentality than "Read then attack (or react)."

It's "Attack then Counter."

And Don structures his counters where you automatically make the best read without really having to think about it.

It speeds up the decision-making process.

Two years ago I had a conversation with two former D1 players. One played at Indiana for Bobby Knight. One played at Louisville for Rick Pitino.

They have both worked Don's camps. When I asked them what they thought about Don teaching this and people giving him crap about "don't read the defense."

One guy responded, "Well, they haven't played then."

To sum up what ended up being a longer conversation after the comment, he meant that as you rise up in competition, there is no time for hesitation.

As players become longer and more athletic, the open gaps close in fractions of a second. If you're hesitating even for a tenth of a second, this can be the difference between all-conference and all-bench.

It really hit home for me when I watched a video of D-Wade making the same Euro step move over and over. Half of the time, he made the incorrect "read" and still had sucess with it. He had success because he had the "attack" mentality.

I've seen examples of this in different situations on the court all the way to down to 3rd grade rec ball.

Without completely understanding how everything links together... I highly advise to read the articles below, buy his videos, and attend his camps.

There is a 100% money-back guarantee on the videos. We get that it's not for everybody... but we just want people to give it a try. Because we believe it helps coaches... even if you completely ignore all of his "Don't read the defense" stuff.
