"Hedging" on a pick and roll

What is the best way to teach "hedging" against a pick and roll, and whether the ball defender should go over or under the pick?

Going over or under is a coaches philosophy type of thing... some want over only, which is the way we did it. IF the player receiveing the pick is not a threat, you can always go under and not get hurt... but at the high school level, they can knock that shot down.
We taught hedging like this ( its a breakdown drill ) we had the defender covering the person setting the pick SHOW EARLY and WIDE..... we had our player put his inside foot on the pickers outside foot and a hand on their side... so that if they left ( slipped the screen ) that defender would know and go with him.
The person defending the ball stays on her/his man and is going over the screen. By hedgeing like I described, that leaves a big space for the defender to stay on his player.
I see a lot of teams just show really early and recover quickly - forces the player with the ball to hesistate giving his defender time to play him tough.
Hope this helps.
