My 12 y/o daughter is really struggling with her shot. She won't let me film her otherwise I would post a video. What I see as the problem... When she catches the ball she places it in a pretty good spot. As she goes into her shot her hand rotates on the ball. instead of her palm facing the rim it now faces inward (left of the rim). it is even more pronounced with her follow through(palm now faces left instead of floor). She says she can't feel this happening. Anyone that has coached their own daughter will understand me offering advice as she struggles isn't going over real well. Her confidence as at an all time low and only getting worse. She is small in size for her age not sure if this is part of the problem as her hands may be small. Otherwise I'm thinking the twist is an effort to get more power on her shots. For the record I don't let her shoot outside of 15 feet. Any thoughts on correcting what I think is hurting my daughters shooting accuracy? What I'm looking for would be a few drills to help correct this. Would a video help with your answer? I may be able to talk her into it.
Thanks

You might try a lot of form shooting... but if she is small for her age, I'm not sure this will help... sometimes younger kids shoot funny just to get the ball up to the rim.
Seeing a video would help for sure... and maybe her seeing her own shot might be of some help too.... kids never think they are doing things until they see it in black and white.
I would start with some form shooting... going from block to block - using one hand... take one dribble and bring the ball up... the guide hand can be behind her back or by her side... but nowhere near the ball at first.
Tell her to be patient... even Michael Jordon got cut from his high school team at one point. Kids mature at different ages as does their athletic prowess....
Good luck

Thanks coach. She has always bought in to the process of form form form even as she watches two handed shots going in by teamates. I will work on a video. She works hard but I think is becoming frustrated as the results are slow in coming.

Tell her to be patient with herself.... we have a saying about this great game... " Basketball is a journey, NOT a destination. "
Its a work in progress... keep at it and things will work out.

Another option would be to see if you can find a good local skill coach to work with her a little bit. I have lots of parents send their kids to me and tell me "I try to tell my kids what they need to work on but they just don't want to listen to their dad. So we thought he/she might listen to you better". Can't tell you how many times I've heard that.

Reading your observation of your daughter, I would check for "Cross eyed" dominance. It appears that she
is taking the ball to her left side to maybe sight the ball and basket better. If she is "Cross eyed" dominant you
will have to make a correction with her "Shot Line" - she will need to keep the ball more in the center of her body
when lifting the ball on her shot. Does that make sense?
