Gathering

I watch NBA basketball I play a lot. Recently at a church game I was called for a double dribble. I argued the calling on the grounds of something I have seen called \"Gathering\". For instance you intercept a pass by slapping it down, you then stop and grab it with two hands as it comes up then begin dribbling. Or something I have seen Dennis Rodman do many times is tip a rebound out to a clear spot on the floor then grab it stop to look around and then begin dribbling. Is there any instance of this in a video or official ruling?

I'm not a ref but I have never seen that called... don't forget the quality of refs that are being used at that level.... I've seen varsity refs blow calls because they didn't understand the rule.
