Performing IN a game

Forum » General » Performing IN a game
Hey guys, I know this sounds funny, but I'm having trouble actually performing in a game. During drills and workouts, I not only execute them correctly, I do them very well. I have all the fundamentals and tools but come gametime, it's like I never learned a thing. For one, I think I'm a little nervous out on the court. But, do you guys have any tips or advice for me to help my skills translate into the actual game?
Thank you!
How old are you?
Im 13, eighth grade.
I play in AAU, middle school, and rec
I don't recall.

Are you the player that I said was preparing for "analysis-paralysis?"

Do you know what that means? Google it.
Seems like you are playing to NOT make a mistake CC ..... relax, you're a young kid, play the game, have some FUN! NOBODY plays a perfect game... how many time did Michael Jordon miss big shots? There are Pro players that make mistakes all the time.... what makes you think that you have to be a better player than them?

I thought I told you this once before... but here it is again.....

Baseball players that hit .300 make millions of dollars a year..... you know what the means? - aside from them being very rich :-)
It means that they are failing 70% of the time..... so go easy on yourself. IF you were so bad I don't think you would be playing on 3 teams....... those coaches must see something in you and your abilities, right? So, How about BELIEVING in yourself.

Keep playing, that in itself should help you become a better player, trust in your abilities, you seem like a good kid, NOW go out and PLAY and have FUN!

Great advice Don...... Are you the player that I said was preparing for "analysis-paralysis?"
Haha, I am the one you guys said was over analyzing.
I have a game in an hour which I'm going to get ready for now. I'll try to just go out, and basically, play, not over thinking situations. I'll tell you guys how it goes
Go play and have some FUN...... stop thinking so much and just react to the situation.... go do what you do BEST!

Don't make us come there LOL :-)
I don't know if you have enough life experience to understand this, but there is a book I give to all my pro clients and recommend to all my high level clients. Sometimes I recommend it to high schoolers who I think are able to benefit.

"Zen Golf" is a book that is written about golf. More than that, it is a book about thinking. If you are able to use golf as a metaphor (look it up) for basketball, get the book and read it. Several times. Relate it to basketball.

I highly recommend this book to any player or coach who has enough experience to be able to understand the parallels between the games. A game is a game.
