Ballhandling Tips

Forum » Ballhandling » Ballhandling Tips
One problem that my friends say that I have is that I am easy to strip the ball from. I can drive in but sometimes when I do a spin move, they tap the ball away. Is the simple solution to just practice ball- handling and dribbling,or are there specific drills that I can practice that will make it harder for defenders to strip the ball from me? Please help! Thank you, in advance.
My advice would be to:

1. When making a move, keep the body tight to your body and away from the defense.
2. Don't force the ball where there is nothing. Pass the ball and move. This will get your team more open shots and eventually will lead to you getting more open shots.
3. Don't make a move to make a move. If the defense is playing solid defense or the team defense collapses on you, find the open man or stop in your tracks and back your dribble back out.
4. If you're constantly getting stripped on a spin move, don't do the spin move anymore.
5. Keep it basic. You don't need a bunch of moves to be good. You just need a primary move (crossover) and a counter-move (inside-out). Perfect those moves and don't worry about anything else. It's better to be great a couple of moves than 'okay' at a bunch of moves.

We also have a bunch of tips in our dribbling and ball handling section: http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/f ... dling.html.

Best of Luck!

Joe has given you some good advice here..... OUR rule of thumb was the closer the defender, the lower the dribble.... gives him less time to steal or tip the ball. Keep the ball off one hip, away from the defender, and have your forearm out slightly to keep him further away from you.

While I taught the spin move I told my players that a move like that is of last resort. I just wanted them to be better at handling the ball. When we caught players using that move.... we came over to double team him and a weakside defender would come up for a steal. DON'T turn your back on the defense.

Work on a couple of good moves, crossover or between the legs, but make sure that you work on them in practice so they become second nature in games. A LOT of practice and then MORE practice.
Some Pros make a pretty good living with a kick butt crossover, leaving the defender asking "where did he go?"

Good luck
