Hello,
There are a lot of defensive drills on your web site, but which one do you recommend the most? Which one is the most effective drill?
Thank you,

Teaching defense is not a one drill task... there are a lot of things involved.
Guard steering
Denying ONE pass away
Defending the post
Denying Flash cutters
Helpside defense 2 passes away
These are my thoughts regarding good defensive teams -
!- Teams that pressure on the ball well are GOOD defensive teams
2- Teams that DENY one pass away are VERY GOOD defensive teams
3- Teams that are GOOD with help side defense are EXCELLENT on D. - along with keeping the ball OUT of the POST.
You teach this with SHELL DRILLS.
IF you are going to teach defense, you have to build it in layers as stated above.... now this is just my opinion.

I agree with Coach Sar. To teach the game of basketball you must break down the parts of the game. In terms of defense you have to decide how you want to play on the ball, off the ball, your help side, rebounding assignments, and etc..
It takes multiple drills to incorportate your style of play. Plus you want a variety of drills to keep things fresh for your players.

I agree with the coaches. Defensive shell drills are the best for teaching defense to youth players.
I go 4 on 4, spread them out. Teach see ball, see man, never turn back to ball.
-On-ball defense
-Denial defense- one pass away
-Help defense- 2 passes away
-Rotate on help
-Communication
