I want to become the best defender that I can. What does it take to be a great defender?

Jay -
The first thing you need is the DESIRE to play great D and it seems like you already have that! Another thing you need is quick feet, play D with your feet and not your hands... any time you reach, your feet stop.
(try it and tell us what you find)
Go to school on the player you are defending and try to exploit his weaknesses. Take away the things he likes to do and make him try and beat you doing something else.
We tried to force the ball away from the middle... towards the sideline... if the ball was on the side, we forced baseline shutting the ball off around 10' from the basket. Doing this takes away a lot of options from the player with the ball and dictates your helpside D which is a good thing.
What level do you play at? Does your team play more m2m or zones?
