Ekam, if you can make 5 in a row from each spot, you're going to be a darn good shooter. However, I would not just focus on the 5 in a row game. I would just use the drill as warmup for maybe 5 minutes.
And like Sars said, you can incorportate some other movements.
I took some years off and I'm getting back in the gym, because I want to be able to demonstrate what I teach. Instead of make 5 in a row, I just started with make 3 from a spot and move back. Notice, I didn't even say make 3 in a row. Then, as I got better, I changed it make 3 in a row. Make 5 in a row, etc.
You need to do progressions that challenge you, but can be accomplished.
Here is a sample workout:
WARMUP – 5 minutes – side step, carioca, long & low carioca, high-knee carioca, skip (forwards & backwards), crossover skip (forwards & backwards), Multi-Direction Lunges (Forward, Side, Rotate to 45 degree behind you, & cross your leg behind you.)
BALL HANDLING – 5 minutes
Stationary & Moving
FORM SHOOTING
Wall Shooting – 20 shots
One-Handed Form Shots at hoop – 30 Shots
Stationary Jump Shooting w/ Guide Hand – Make 3 & Move Back - shoot from front & sides of hoop. Make 9 from each spot. Track the total number of shots you shoot from each spot.
Step-Ins – spin the ball to yourself and run into your shot to shoot. Start from behind 3-point line.
Mid-Range (10 to 16 Ft) – Shoot 5 off of each foot. Shoot 5 free throws after every 5 shots. Pick 3 different spots.
Total of 30 shots.
Total of 30 Free Throws.
FOOTWORK SHOOTING
Front Pivot – shots off of the front pivot. Imagine running off of a screen from the wing/baseline area.
Inside (or Reverse) Pivot – come from the block/baseline area up to the elbow or wing area.
Drop Step – same thing as inside pivot, except you do a drop step to the basket and take a dribble if neeed to finish at the basket.
Shoot 5 for eac h foot & pivot. Shoot 5 free throws after each pivot.
Total of 30 shots.
Total of 30 free throws
FULL COURT LAY UPS – Ballhandling, Finishing, & Conditioning
Extension Dribble – Try to get the full distance of the court in 3 to 4 dribbles. May have to start with 5 or 6 and work down.
Crossover – crossover at 2 or 3 spots on the court.
Hesitation Move – hesitation move at 2 or 3 spots on the court.
End with 20 Free Throws
This is just a sample workout. You can make things easier or harder based on your level. I would also have 3 to 4 different workouts for variation.

Thats a good workout program Joe... and like you said... he can adjust it to fit his needs and abilities.

Thanks, Coach Sars. You'll notice I didn't have any shooting off the dribble.
From some of Don Kelbick's sample workouts, I've seen him have take a pivot and focus on the pivot for the workout. For example:
Front Pivot - Lay Up
Front Pivot - Shot
Front Pivot - 1 Dribble - Shot
Front Pivot - 2 Dribbles - Shot
Front Pivot & Cross (Counter to front pivot for when defender is trailing you hard and you front pivot, then use a crossover step to drive past defender).
Front Pivot & Cross - Lay Up
Front Pivot & Cross - 1 Dribble - Shot
Front Pivot & Cross - 2 Dribbles - Shot
With that, you could easily shoot 70 to 140 shots if not more. For me, that just helps simplify workouts.

Anything that can help a young guy be a better shooter and get more confidence in himself... I am all for that.
When I ran shooting camps we tried to use the KISS method for the younger kids... the older ones we gave a little more to do... until towards the end of the camp cycle... then we allowed everyone to try it.

Ekam, here is something that you can do that can help and is fun too.
Shooting Tip - Eyes Closed and Eyes Open Free Throw Shooting Drill (Ithis is best done with a partner)
Close your eyes and shoot free throws.... concentrate on your form and let your partner tell you where the shot was off... ie. short, off left, right, long etc. This forces you to concentrate on your form. Just a thought.

for my jump shot, i don't have one fluid motion... the ball goes above my head before i even lift of the ground,
i need to fix that so my ball goes above my head at the same time my feet leave the ground...
I'm willing to spend as much time i can to fix it and make it perfect
Do you know any good way to fix it or should i just shoot close the basketball and do it proper

How is your form? If you aren't sure, go stand by a wall and work on your form there... that way you wont have to worry about making the shot. You might try that with your jumper also.
Start close to the basket [/b]once you have that fixed.... you should be starting your jump as you are bringing the ball up..... Look at that Post " Better Shooting 2" There is a video there from Swish that gives you a good idea as to what it looks like. It is very difficult to talk about this when we can't see what you are doing..... BUT - IF you have the ball over your head BEFORE you go into your shot, you are not going to have a lot of luck.

my form is perfect... everything is almost perfectly straight, and everything else...
and when the ball is in my hand during the shot, my fingers just my fingers touch it, donmt know about that

Dribble the ball once, bring it up to the shooting position..... that should put the ball in the proper position in your hand. You are going to want a little more of your hand touching the ball.... once you have the ball up...there should just be a little space in the palm of your hand....

is there anyway to work on my shooting in my garage when its raining outside too much and i have nowhere to go
4/27/2010 12:07
Yes, practice your footwork. Good footwork will help you make more game shots. It allows you to get your feet consistently lined up the same way. We have diagrams in our post play book that explain proper footwork and that's what I'd recommend. It includes front pivot, inside (back) pivot, sweep, step through, and drop step. You can practice that footwork in your basement or living room.
Not to mention, good footwork will help you in all other aspects of basketball - getting open, defense, rebounding, driving past the defender, post moves, perimeter moves, etc.

You could play / practice in the rain as long as its not Hurricane force :-) Had some 8th graders that would practice shooting outside in the Winter - would shovel off their drives.
You could work on your form inside and your footwork like Jeff suggests.

okay i could play outside but when it rains, the floor gets very slippery and the ball always gets stuck in the net when i score which gets very annoying
4/28/2010 01:27
okay so today i took well over 200 shots,( didn't have more time today, busy today)
all my shots were around 5-6 feet. MY shots started off feeling so uncomfortable but now it doesn't feel that bad, still a little uncomfortable though
Sometimes i would concentrate jumping at the same time as bringing the ball up, sometimes proper follow through, or sometimes something else
At the end i didn't figure out if i now bring the ball up the same time as jumping...mostly likely probably do that now (is there any way to tell if i do it right)
Tomorrow should i just focus on jumping and bringing the ball up at the same time so i could be 100% sure i shoot a jump shot properly?

Yes, make sure that your form and technique are correct.... check out some shooting on you tube.... the Swish video etc. You need to get some good habits going and break yourself of the bad ones.

hey,coach Sar,
i thought i'd try this and ask if its okay to do
sometimes instead of just shooting, i get in a triple threat position, while looking down at my feet,
then i'd jump up and bring the ball up while looking at my feet and not release the ball...
after i get in a rhythm, then look at the hoop but still not release the ball for a certain number of reps
So then i'll be way easier to get used to it

Ekam,
I don't see where that would hurt anything.... I might suggest that you don't look at your feet, look at your target. You don't want to create another bad habit that you will need to break.
That could be part of your warm up..... form shooting,l then practice the form for going into your jumper, then shooting a jump shot.

wsup coach sar
the other day while i was working on my jumpshot, i wondered why am i not getting any power...the shot should be easier by now..
(shoot with my rand hand so ball is near my right eye right above my forehead alittle)
i then realized i i was holding the ball way up higher and it was so much on my left side
I thought to much about jumping properly and forgot about where i hold the ball,
but why didn't my body automatically remember where i shoot the ball from since i always shoot from there
