getting ready for next season

Forum » General » getting ready for next season
its been a long time since i last posted, I took a few weeks off ....... want to start training with your help.
I just started this week and i just did form shooting and worked on my handles. Make minimum of 200 form shots and practiced my dribbling for around 20 minutes. I also am lifting and doing plyometrics.

Sunday= plyometric workout
Monday= Upper body and Abs
Tuesday=
Wednesday= Lower Body (upper body a little because of some compound exercises)
Thursday=
Friday= uppper body
Saturday= Day off

I wanted to add basketball into this.

Should i tell you my stregth and weaknesses?
Yes - that would help.... remember to add shooting after every work out session.
i try to come up with my own basketball plan but its very confusing and I just never finish it properly. None of my friends take ball seriously so i have to practice alone
so right after i finish workking out my upper body i should start my shooting practice or wait a little while
OK, lets try to make this simple enough so you it doesn't turn you off the game.

Think about these areas - focusing on weaknesses.
Shooting
Ball handling / dribbling
Quickness / footwork
Strength
It doesn't have to be immediately - take some time for a breather, hydrate yourself and do some shooting to loosen yourself up.... start with form... shoot close and work your way back.

I'm glad you liked the article.
As for this post

The way to gain confidence is to:

Break tasks into smaller units, Acknowledge your success for each step, and Learn from your mistakes to re-enforce your confidence.

1. Break task into smaller steps Before you set out to perform a task or try to achieve a goal, you must realize that the activity is really a series of smaller steps. This is a basic concept in any type of project planning. Thus, instead of waiting until the end to determine if you are successful, you have a series of successes, leading up to the finish.

2. Acknowledge success for each step For each one of these steps or mini-tasks, you must acknowledge your success. Congratulate yourself each time you succeed. If you don't do well, correct your error. Take care about admonishing yourself, except in extreme cases.

3. Re-enforce overall confidence. This self-talk will re-enforce your acknowledgment of your abilities and increase your confidence as you go along on achieving the greater goal.

thanks, and i can't shoot jump shots yet, should i start to practice jump shots or wait till i get a little stronger?
No jump shooting until your Doctor gives you the ok. Stick to what he says you can do...... you sure don't want any set backs.
I'm completely healthy now, i was talking about elevating in the air and then shooting. Should i start shooting like that now?
it feels so weird when i shoot like that
Find a video on the net where GOOD shooters are shooting jump shots... then you have to practice it, don't worry so much about how high you get... that should come natural... IF you start thinking that I have to get off the ground 36" you will be thinking more about that then shooting the ball. Just go into the shot getting off the ground.

Try to stop worrying about all of this stuff... get out there and shoot the ball... try to get after it like in game speed. This is not a game of HORSE anymore... you are trying to prepare yourself for Varsity ball..... get after it.... like George Lehman said..... " the ball is in your court now."

Good luck
i have no problem about jumping it just feels a little weird and i have no power, its probably cause i never practiced it before.

Also is this a good way to plan a goal

Yearly Goal
Goal:- become #1 player on school team next year (i could do it easily if i focus enough)

Break it into 3 months
master a number of different moves
able to jump shoot easily, etc

Then a month
same thing as 3 month goal

weekly
1000 shots a week, etc

Daily
upper body workout today, etc
I like the idea that you have started a plan, but before I comment and make suggestions I would like a little more information regarding your playing experiences

- Tell us what teams (s) you have played for, what position, at what age you started - any stats you might have - strengths and weaknesses as you see them.
Nobody likes to talk about weaknesses but IF you are going to achieve this goal its important that you address this issue.
The Winning Attitude
What makes one person a winner and other people losers? How they think! Your self image determines your ability and your success. You will be ready mentally if you are thinking success. For instance:

A WINNER is always ready to tackle something new... a loser is prone to believe it can't be done.

A WINNER isn't afraid of competition... losers excuses themselves with the idea that the competition can beat them.

A WINNER makes a mistake and says, "I was wrong"... a loser makes a mistake and says, "It wasn't my fault," and blames someone else.

A WINNER is challenged by a problem and goes through it.. a loser does not want to face it, tries to go around it, but never gets by it.

A WINNER realizes there is no time like the present to get a job done... a loser is prone to procrastinate with the hope that things will get better tomorrow.

A WINNER thinks positively, acts positively, and lives positively... a loser usually has a negative attitude and a negative approach to everything.

A WINNER says "Let's find out..." a loser says, "Nobody knows."

A WINNER makes commitments... a loser makes empty promises.

A WINNER says, "I'm good, but not as good as I should be..."ยท a loser says, "I'm not as bad as a lot of other people."

A WINNER learns from those who are superior... a loser tries to tear down those who are superior.

SO IF YOU, WANT TO BE A WINNER, THINK LIKE A WINNER... ACT LIKE A WINNER... AND SOONER THAN YOU THINK, YOU'LL BE A WINNER TOO!
i played basketball ever since i was a little kid, sometimes alone or with friends sometime in our cul-ti-sac for hours a day. didn't tkae it seriously that time though, just started a few years ago takin it seriusly
Played in YMCA for 2 years (not very competitive anymore)..full of people just looking for hours to graduate

Tried out this year for very first time senior boys basketball team..never played for school team before..made team..but not starter. I was probably the best ball handler on team and the top 3 in shooting accuracy, but i was not confident in myself and not a single bit aggressive (that has changed now.kinda, still working on it)
i'm a point guard, not very tall, still growing, around 5'8
I never recorded any stats but we had a very bad coach (not being disrespectful, just telling truth) school finally kicked him out, our team had a really bad pffence and he basically didn't teach us anything

Strengths:- very quick, agile, fast, good shooting %, very good ballhandler,
Weaknesses:-
Need to keep head up at all time while dribbling, loose focus easily
good at dribbling with opposite hand but still need to make it equal to my right hand
Get better at finishing layups, make left handed layups better, feel very uncomfortable, but could make them
Need to be able to shoot jumpshots (never shot any before) which cmeans i have to get stronger
Get better at three's, barely shoot any, need alittle more power causes i rarely shoot them, but i can score and shoot
Also i am pretty good at defense with good awareness, but when i play one on one defense, the offender gets past me so easily, even my little brother. I don't think i play defense with enough determination and give up on my man easily
A good defensive player needs quick feet and determination.... also, YOU dictate what you are going to allow that player to do... force him to his off hand.. force him to the sideline... force him to the baseline.
Look at your strenghts and weaknesses...... come up with a plan that will help your correct your defciiencies and make your strengths better. Write them down on paper.... find out exactly how much time you have to devote on your game and then split it up amongst those areas

.

This is an area that you definately need to correct..... Keep your head up while dribbling. (this is one example that I wanted to point out to you)
