    Coach Carl Scales has been a valued member of Breakthrough Basketball camps for over a decade, bringing energy, experience, and a passion for player development to every session.
    20+ years of coaching experience at the high school and AAU/travel levels, helping players develop and compete at higher levels
    Key contributor to multiple successful high school programs, including a state championship at Hopkins and a 31–1 state tournament team at Tartan
    Breakthrough Basketball lead coach since 2015, currently serving as a Skills and Leadership Clinician and Curriculum Development Consultant
    Known for clear teaching, strong communication, and an energetic coaching style that helps players improve while building confidence

    Coach Williams was born in Bronx, NY and raised in Houston, TX. He played on Varsity and AAU in high school before attending the post graduate school, New York International Academy, in Endicott, NY. He averaged 21 ppg, and the team became the new USA National Prep Champions in the 2018-2019 season tournament
    After a successful season at NYIA, Williams then went to to attend Holy Family College, an NAIA school in Manitowoc, WI, for the 2019-2020 season. During his time at HFC, the school wasn't able to overcome the challenges of Covid-19 and closed down. Williams found a home at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN for the 2021-2022 season where he helped his team became Conference Champions in the MCAC division
    Since high school, Williams has privately trained many athletes from K-12 and multiple college athletes. He specializes in skill development, weight training, and conditioning. Williams has been a Breakthrough Basketball assistant for several years before being promoted to a lead coach. He takes pride in being able to coach whatever kid is in front of him no matter the age or skill level

    Coach Chris VanderHyde

    Chris VanderHyde is in his 8th year as an assistant coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. A 2002 graduate of Hope College, he has spent 23 years coaching basketball. Previously, he was head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Park Center HS in Brooklyn Park, MN, leading the team to four state tournaments and two state championships. He also coached at Bethel University for five years, helping the team reach four MIAC playoffs
    VanderHyde has extensive experience working basketball camps, including Gustavus’ large overnight camps for 12 years. He has also worked at the Five-Star Basketball camp, among others. Over the years, VanderHyde has helped develop players who have gone on to play at various college levels, including some who have reached the professional ranks
    With 20 years of classroom teaching experience, VanderHyde is committed to being a teacher of the game. He focuses on connecting the lessons learned on the court with valuable life skills, helping players grow both as athletes and individuals

    Observing Coaches

    Coaches can attend for free by working the basketball camp. Email us with your coaching/playing experience if you're interested in helping with the basketball camp.
    Otherwise there is a $97 fee to attend as an "observing coach". You will get to learn new drills and techniques from Chris VanderHyde, just like all the players and other coaches in attendance. Visit this link to reserve your spot as an observing coach.
    This fee is not necessary for parents or individuals of paid campers.
