Tight Spaces Ball Handling Drill - Helps Develop You Into An Elite Scorer

Home > Coaching > Drills > Dribbling > Tight Spaces Ball Handling Drill

Who Is This For:

This is great for any age level. If you're a beginner, you can increase the width of the cones. If you're more advanced, you can decrease the width of the cones.

Drill Purpose:

As mentioned above, this ball handling drill helps you develop better handles. It forces you to be quicker and more explosive with your dribble moves.

This drill is also great because it self-coaches. You don't need a coach or trainer to tell you what to do. You have to use and develop great ball handling habits in order to have any success in the drill.

Vital Skills That You Develop

  • Attack in straight lines - makes you quicker

You are forced to attack in straight lines. Attacking in straight lines helps you get to the basket quicker and wreak more havoc on the defense.

  • More deceptive - creates openings

In order to succeed in this drill, you have to be more deceptive with your moves. You have to use eyes, shoulders, and other body movements to shift the defender to create a gap. That way, you can get by them.

  • Play through contact and even use it to your advantage

You also learn how to play through contact. Due to the smaller space, there is going to be contact. And if you don't learn how to play through it, you won't succeed in the drill.

Additionally, you learn how to initiate contact to your benefit! Of course, you don't want to plow directly into them, this would be a charge.

However, if you attack the defender's hip and make contact, you can knock them slightly off balance.

This delays their recovery and gives you a better chance to score or create a scoring opportunity for your teammate.

  • Better and quicker recognition of when to attack

Additionally, through trial and error with this drill, you learn to recognize the exact space that you need to get by the defender.

You can find an almost identical drill on this DVD:

You can also find many other game based drills for ballhandling, scoring, decision making, and so on on this video set:

Sure, Dan. You can modify it for a beginner where you do not allow steals. You can modify it for an intermediate or advanced player where you allow steals.

Essentially one on one drill with some limitations. Such a new concept I wonder.

Great drill, especially good for my younger/less advanced players who are unaware of the space and time/number of dribbles the're using. They think going very wide will solve the problem or slow down, trying to buy time and decide what to do. Can't wait to try it as I suspect that it is exactly what I have been looking for! Thanks for another great addition to my coaching arsenal!
