When you work on lay ups or finishing, it's VERY important to practice a bunch of different situations.
And you should spend a lot of time practicing lay ups against live defenders. This is one of the best ways to improve your finishing skills.
You should also vary your 1v1 drills.
- Finishing against help defense.
- Finishing against a defender that is trailing you.
- Varying the angles and distance of the approaching defender.
However, if you're not careful, you can forget to include (or not practice enough) one of the most common situations for finishing at the basket...
It's when you drive to the basket.
During games, you don't simply just blow by the defender every time. Most times, the defender is on your hip or even slightly in front of you, so you need to practice this!
However, a lot of 1v1 finishing drills forget to include this frequently occurring situation. When I first started incorporating 1v1 drills to improve individual scoring skills, I personally forgot to do this as well.
Here is a great drill that you can use to work on this.
