Handle Pressure Like a Point Guard

The crowd’s loud. The defense is trapping. Your team can’t get the ball over half court. Pressure can rattle even good players, unless you’re prepared for it.

The best players don’t just have great handles. They have poise, vision, and escape plans.

As the saying goes, “Pressure busts pipes... and builds diamonds.”

Whether you’re a point guard or not, the ability to handle pressure is a separator. It’s also a surefire way to guarantee you’re on the floor in crunch time.

Here are three ways to train those same qualities and become the diamond.

No Panic, Just Poise: 3 Pressure Busting Measures 

1. See the Floor Before the Catch

Most turnovers happen before the dribble — when players catch the ball without awareness.

To fix that, scan the floor before every catch:

  • Where’s the trap coming from? Knowing the type of press your opponent is running will give you clues as to what to expect.

  • Who’s open if you get double-teamed? When you know where the trap is coming from and how the defense is rotating, you can anticipate the vulnerable areas. 

That one-second scan gives you options before pressure arrives.

2. Use Your Body to Protect the Ball

Great ball handlers aren’t flashy — they’re smart.

They use their body as a shield. To do this:

  • Turn sideways.

  • Dribble outside your back foot. This creates maximum distance between the ball and the defender.

  • Shield the ball with your inside arm at a 90 degree angle.

  • Keep your eyes down the floor.

When trapped, hold the ball in power position:

  • Feet wider than hips, in a slight squat.

  • 3 points of contact with the ball (generally both hands and your shoulder or side).

  • Elbows out to create space.

Pivot low and strong to create space and find passing windows, keeping your body between the ball and defender.

If you stay calm and balanced, traps become opportunities. Great players know that if they are trapped, someone else is open. Welcome the trap and make the defense pay.

3. Master the “Escape Dribble”

When double-teamed, dribbling through pressure rarely works.

Instead, use the escape dribble. An escape dribble is a short retreat dribble to create space to pass or reattack.

The escape dribble works because it allows you to separate from the defense while keeping your head down the floor.

Teach yourself this rhythm:

  • One hard retreat dribble while pushing off your back foot to create maximum space.

  • Eyes up to see if you have an open teammate.

  • If no one is open, attack the defender with one hard move.

1 Drill To Handle Pressure Better

The escape dribble is one tool every player needs. Master it with the “Escape Change” drill.

  • Start on the baseline.

  • Speed dribble to the free throw line.

  • Execute an escape dribble back to the baseline.

  • Make a change of direction move (crossover, between the legs, or behind the back) and repeat with the opposite hand.

  • Perform a total of 12 reps. Do 4 crossovers, 4 between the legs, and 4 behind the back. After making the change-of-direction move, explode forward!

You can practice escape dribbles on your own. You can work on protecting the ball in your driveway.
