1 on 1 Fast Break Drill To Improve Finishing

As the video states, this is a great 1 on 1 drill that improves your ability to attack the defender and finish in a fast break situation.

It also introduces passing and catching out of the fast break. By getting repetitions where you catch and attack while on the move, this reduces turnovers. There are fewer footwork problems and traveling violations. And you don't fumble the ball and get it stolen by the defense. Also, by improving this skill, you will be able to reach the basket faster and beat the defense.

Additionally, the first aspect of the drill improves your athleticism by working on your first step speed, acceleration, and agility.

Instructions:

Place 2 chairs just short of mid-court on one side of the court. Players start on the baseline, opposite of the chairs. A coach, manager, or player is positioned on the floor with the ball as the passer.

Both players sprint around the chair and head back toward the basket.

Once headed back toward the basket, the ball is passed to the offensive player who is in the outside line.

You can also add a dribble limitation, such as 2 or 3 dribbles after catching the ball to add effectiveness.

You want to vary the passing location to simulate other fast break situations as well. That's because your body position changes and it's good to practice catching and attacking from similar angles that will happen during the game.

And if you want to gain more speed prior to the catch, you can place the cones closer to half court. This allows you to get around the cones and take a couple of steps prior to catching the ball.

20 Next Level Finishing Moves

As stated in the video...

1 - 30% to 40% of your shots come within 5 feet of the basket.

2 - And when it comes to points per shot, shots within 5 feet are the most efficient shots in basketball.

This means if you get really good at scoring around the basket as a player or as a team, it can have a significant effect on how many points you score.

That's why we created Next Level Finishing Moves with Jim Huber. There are 20 finishing moves that show you how to practice them step by step. It also contains 20 competitive drills like the one above, so you can practice your moves against a live value defender.
