Syracuse + Merrimack = The Next Evolution of the Zone Defense

A 2-3 Zone for Today's Game - Simple, Fast, and Suffocating

image

Mediocrity is not fun.

For 5 seasons, Coach Tartara’s teams played straight man-to-man defense.

The result? A 53% win rate (63-54).

Decent, respectable, but mediocre.

Facing bigger schools with more talent, Coach Tartara knew something had to change.

So he and his staff made a bold decision - to reinvent their defense from the ground up.

And the results were incredible!

Introducing The Lockdown 2-3 Zone Defense

Inspired by Jim Boeheim’s legendary Syracuse 2-3 Zone defense and Joe Gallo’s innovative Merrimack 2-3 Zone approach, Coach Tartara tailored a 2-3 Zone for his high school team.

Check out what Coach Tartara has done since implementing his 2-3 Zone:

  • Win percentage jumped to 74% from 53%
  • 5 straight seasons of holding opponents under 45.2 points per game!
  • Back-to-Back Coach of The Year Awards (‘23-’24)
  • 92-33 record since adopting the Lockdown 2-3 Zone
  • Regional Finals Championship
  • Now the winningest coach in school history

This Morphing Zone Defense Looks Like a 4-1 Zone!?

This chameleon-like defense often confuses the opposition.

It morphs from 4-1 alignments to 1-3-1 alignments to everything in between.

This leaves the offense clueless on how to attack it, because those normal zone strategies just don't work.

It is definitely not your typical 2-3 zone!

A New Winning Identity

Not only did the Lockdown 2-3 Zone give Coach Tartara a simple defense that could beat more talented teams...

It gave his team a missing identity.

When his team discovered they could hang their hat on defense - his team developed a new air of confidence.

They no longer feared tougher, stronger, or taller opponents.

In this unique 2-3 Zone, Coach Tartara teaches you…

  • Alignments using visual cues to make player understanding easier
  • Defensive slides to eliminate easy perimeter 3's
  • When to go from 2-3 Zone to 2-3 Matchup Zone
  • How to defend all inbounds sets starting in a 1-3-1 and transitioning to 2-3 zone
  • Drills to quickly rep slides each practice in a short amount of time
  • How to deny high post entry with guard positioning
  • How defenders use the “boxes” to take away open perimeter looks
  • How to matchup and defend the high post (if the high post does catch the ball)

It is simple!

Easy rules and visual cues allow for quick implementation.

Coach Tartara shows you step-by-step how to implement.

It is time-saving!

No more worries about multiple offenses or dozens of sets to go against.

More time in practice to focus on offense and skill development.

It is highly effective and means more wins

45 points per game allowed!

Coach Tartara’s win % jumped from 53% - 74% after implementing his 2-3 Zone.

6 Reasons Opponents HATE Facing This Zone Defense

In the last 5 years at Cuyahoga Heights HS, Coach Tartara has produced elite defensive numbers using his system.

Check out 5 reasons your opponent will hate playing your team this year.

1. Slash Your Opponent’s Scoring By 10 PPG!

Coach Tartata went from giving up 55 ppg to giving up less than 45.2 ppg average for the last 5 years!

He teaches you defensive visual cues for guard and wing positioning that limit open looks.

He also teaches you how to morph the zone and match up when the ball goes to the high post.

image

2. Shut Down Any Zone Offense - Tartara’s Defenses Produce Ridiculously Low Points Per Possession From 0.81 to 0.85 PPP.

Offensively, teams want to be at or above 1.00 point per possession…which they never get close to against Coach Tartara’s teams.

Why? Coach Tartara teaches how to take away the common methods of attacking a zone such as: high post, overload, and screening actions.

image

3. Force Teams Into Their Worst 3-Point Shooting Nights of the Year - Tartara’s Team Consistently Keep Their Opponents Below 30% 3-Point Shooting

Over the past 5 year teams shot 28.7% from 3 point range against this 2-3 Zone.

Coach Tartara’s zone movements and player positioning is key. Players learn to get through their “boxes” to eliminate any easy perimeter 3.

image

4. Turn Every Possession Into a Tough, Contested Shot - Average of 37.9 Defensive FG %

Opponents FG% over the last 5 years is a staggeringly low 37.9%.

The zone positions players to take away the easiest shots- paint shots as well as catch and shoot 3’s.

image

5. Break School Records and Rack Up Steals Like Never Before!

In school history, there have been 4 years of 250+ steals … 3 of those years have come since switching to the 2-3 Zone!

Players learn to anticipate the offense’s actions.

There are limited places the offense is looking to go with the ball and the defense is usually 1 step ahead of the offense.

And Coach Tartara shows you how to trap the short corner area. This creates a large amount of steals for his defense as well.

image

6. Create Chaos Without Fouling and Win The Free Throw Battle!

In the last 5 years Coach Tartara’s teams have allowed an average of 222 ft attempts per season. In the 5 years prior they allowed an average of 303 FT’s per season.

That’s an improvement of 81 FT’s by the defense!

Which also means less foul trouble to worry about.

Why do they dominate the free throw battle?

  • The zone drastically reduces blow bys because players know where they need to be and beat the offense to spots.
  • There are also help defenders in position meaning less visible gaps for the offense to want to attack.

The Defense That Gives Your Offense The Edge

As you can see, Tartara’s 2-3 zone terrorizes their opponent’s offense…

  • Defensive slides taking away the offense's preferred actions.
  • Anticipating ball movements.
  • Trapping short corners (often a poor passer).
  • Morphing into a match-up zone at times.
  • 5 players move as 1 on the pass through their defensive spots.

This means more missed shots and more steals for your team.

This means more advantageous situations in transition. (2v1, 3v1, 3v2, etc.)

And this means more easy buckets and more points scored for your team!

But there is another advantage you will get from this 2-3 Zone…

The Hidden Advantage Of The 2-3 Zone - More Practice Time For Offense and Skill Development!

One reason Coach Tartara shifted from man-to-man was practice time.

He felt there just wasn’t enough time in practice for the offensive and skill work he wanted to do.

In the last 5 years, since switching to the 2-3 Zone…

  • FG% jumped from 36.9 → 41.7%
  • 3FG% rose from 27.2 → 32.5%
  • FT% increased from 59.4→ 64.3%
  • Assists climbed from 10.7 per game → 12.6 per game

Why?

He found that playing his Lockdown 2-3 Zone Defense allowed him more time to focus on offense and skill development in practice because…

  1. Most teams run very similar actions against the 2-3 Zone defense.

Your team learns these common actions and how to defend them. And then they often see the exact same actions from game to game and team to team.

  2. You do not have to prepare your defense for dozens of various sets from game to game.

This is especially beneficial come tournament time, when you may have to play back-to-back nights.

  3. Their defensive slides and breakdowns can be repped quickly in practice

This leaves more time for offense and skill work.

DeMythifying The 2-3 Zone Defense

If you have ever coached or watched much basketball, you’ll probably know there are myths out there surrounding the 2-3 Zone.

Myth #1 You can’t run a 2-3 Zone against a good shooting team.

False! Coach Tartara shows you how to use visual cues and teach player positioning to contest and limit 3 point attempts (remember, opponents shot only 28.7% from 3 against his teams over the last 5 years).

Myth #2 You must have great size and length to play 2-3 Zone.

False! All things being equal, yes, size and length are good, but Coach Tartara has found that some of his smaller, quicker teams become more adept at anticipating passes that they tend to wreak even more havoc on the offense than taller teams.

In fact, one of Coach Tartara’s best years they started:

5’7” Guard

5’9” Guard

6’1”Wing

6’2” Wing

6’2” Goalie (Center)

Myth #3 It is a lazy defense.

False! Coach Tartara’s defense is anything but lazy. The players move quickly on each and every pass to take away passing angles and easy shots by the offense. They are a blur on defense, and move with precision and pace because they often know where the ball is going before the offense does!

Myth #4 Implementing a 2-3 Zone defense is complicated.

False! Maybe for some, but Coach Tartara gives you a step-by-step blueprint to follow. If you know what to teach and how to teach, then implementing an elite level 2-3 zone can be faster and easier than teaching man-to-man.

Defensive Struggles? Use Plan B

Most coaches recommend having multiple defenses you can throw at an offense.

Coach Tartara’s 2-3 Zone Defense is a great Plan A!

But if you prefer another primary defense, Tartara’s defense is a great plan B on nights when Plan A isn’t working.

  • Maybe you cant match up with a team man-to-man
  • Maybe you are looking to stop an offensive run
  • Maybe you are looking for an inbound defense so you don’t need to prepare for 20 inbound sets
  • Maybe you are want to catch them off guard with a defense they didn’t prep for

Everyone needs a Plan B in their backpocket.

“One of the BEST 2-3 Zones I’ve seen at any level!”

Coach Tartara can flat out coach!

His teams always seem to overachieve. And I think the number one reason they overachieve is their smothering defense….our teams seem to always struggle scoring against his 2-3 zone.

- Robert P. Ohio

One of the best 2-3 Zones I’ve seen, at any level.

I’ve seen coach Tartara’s teams play many times. It’s so fluid and takes away so many things offenses want to do. I always expect teams to get tons of open 3’s against a zone, but they never do against Coach Tartara’s Zone.

It is definitely a modern, updated way of thinking about zone defense.

My first impression is that this defense will really confuse offenses because of the various defensive alignment used throughout the zone.

I've tried mixing some zone defenses in before, but we usually give up open looks on the perimeter, which means we can only play zone against teams who can't shoot the 3.

I think this zone defense finally provides me with a way of taking away open perimeter shots.

Great whiteboard and on-court instruction to make this easy to understand- can't wait to get started!

Thanks!
