2 on 1 Continuous

Categories: Transition
Ages: Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

This drill is designed to simulate a fast break 2 on 1 situation in transition where a second defender is added to teach players that in game situations they must use their advantage quickly and efficiently before the defense recovers.

Instructions

  • Divide players into two teams, half on each sideline at center court, with one player from each team back in defensive position at opposite ends of the court. Have two players from the first offensive team start with a ball just beyond half court.
  • On the whistle, the two offensive players look to bring the ball up court and attack defender #1, attempting to make him or her commit. As soon as they cross half court, however, defender #2 sprints to the center circle and then joins his teammate, turning it into a two on two situation.
  • Once the offense scores or the defense has forced a turnover or secured a rebound, the two defenders now are on offense and play the ball back to the opposite basket for a two on one at the other end. The first two offensive players go to the end of his or her line.
  • As soon as the two new offensive players cross half court, the first person in the defensive line sprints to half court to again turn the two on one into a two on two situation. Play runs continuously end to end, with defense becoming the new offense and one new defender filling his or her defensive end each time down court.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Make the defender commit before passing.
  • Keep your space offensively to put pressure on the defense.
  • Make one, or at the most, two passes as the second defender is filling quickly. No over-passing!

Motivation/Teaching Tips:

  • Spacing is critical!
  • In game situations, fast break advantages do not last long, so encourage players to dribble, space, and pass efficiently and read and react to what the defense gives them.
  • Also stress the importance of the lone defender slowing down the offense until help arrives.
