1-2-1-1 Zone Press

Categories: Defense
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Summary:

The primary goal of the 1-2-1-1 Zone Press is to deny the inbound pass. If an inbound pass is made, the goal would then be to confuse, or trap the receiver. This is a great way to disrupt an opponent's offense and force turnovers, and is best run after the opponent has successfully made a free throw.

Personnel:

Player #1 positions himself near the foul circle, and is tasked with disrupting the inbound pass and protecting the middle. Ideally, he should be a quicker player, preferably a guard. Players #2 and #3, usually forwards or wing men, would be positioned on opposite ends of the foul line. Player #4 is the "center field", ideally the team's quickest player, and has the toughest assignment, tasked to disrupt passing over the front line and protect the middle area. Player #5 would be your team's center or best rebounder, preventing opponents from getting an easy score.

Instructions

As the play starts, defensive player #1 is at his position as offensive player #1 prepares for the inbound pass. Defenders #2 and #3 are positioned at opposing ends of the foul line, defending the first receivers to the strong and weak sides respectively. Defender #4 is up against the long pass, and would need to be quick to react against any potential receiver. Defender #5, the big man, is the deep threat, the man charged with protecting the basket.
