Categories: Agility  Ballhandling / Dribbling  Defense  Footwork
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

To work on changing directions from in a full court setting from either a sprint, slide, backpedal, or combination of all three.

Instructions

  • Player 1 will sprint to the first cone, change directions, then sprint to the second cone, then change directions, and sprint to the third cone. Continue on until all cones have been sprinted to.
  • This can be done as a defensive slide zig zag, a slide sprint zig zag, a backpedal sprint, a backpedal slide, or any combination you can think of.
  • With the sprint slide, it can be turned into a closeout drill if you have the player break down as they approach the cone.
  • The player can also go around the cones instead changing directions on the inside of the cone.
  • In this variation of the drill, the player will dribble the basketball through the zig zag course, changing directions at each cone.
  • This diagram shows the player changing directions while going around the cone.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Plant the outside foot in order to push off into the direction change.
  • Stay low throughout, especially as you approach the cone.
  • Maintain balance and posture.
  • Use a change of direction move at each cone (ex. crossover, between legs, spin dribble, behind the back)

Motivation/Teaching Tips:

  • Time the drill to show improvement.
  • Two like courses can be set up and players can compete against each other.
  • Run the drill as a relay.
