The Area NBA Players Know To Attack (And You Should, Too)
What is the first help defense principle that almost every coach teaches their players?
The one that comes to mind for me is “jump to the ball.” In 20 years of coaching, I’ve heard that countless times.
Jumping to the ball simply means that on every pass, all defenders should move (jump) towards the direction of the ball. That shrinks driving lanes and puts defensive players in position to help.
Does that mean driving isn’t an option? No! It just means you need to know which road to take.
For that answer, listen to NBA Trainer & creator of the Attack And Counter Skill Development System Don Kelbick talk about a simple but powerful concept on how to better attack the defense off the catch.
Why Attacking Opposite Is An Example Of “Good Offense Beats Good Defense”
Some teams and players won’t jump to the ball. Against those teams, most anything you do offensively will be successful.
However, against the best teams that move on the pass and load up on help, you need to utilize concepts that work against good defense.
Attacking opposite is one of those concepts. Here’s why:

On the pass from 1 to 3, all the off ball defenders move towards 3.

When 3 catches the ball, the floor is spaced like this.

If 3 drives back in the direction they received the pass, they are driving right into the teeth of the defense.

Conversely, if 3 attacks opposite of the pass, there is space to get to the rim.
Here’s a couple pictures that show you NBA players applying this concept.

A key element of attacking opposite is doing it right on the catch. Holding the ball and “reading the defense” slows you down and allows the defense to reset. Coach Kelbick’s attacking mentality trains players to be decisive and confident with the ball.
