15 Keys To A High-Scoring Fast Break With Danny Miles of Oregon Tech

At Oregon Tech, Danny Miles runs a numbered fast break. Coach Miles has won over 1,000 games (2nd all time among men's college coaches) and has one of the best transition teams in the country -- averaging a scorching 81.6 PPG while maintaining the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation at 1.43!!

Here are the 15 keys to running a high-scoring fast break...

  1. Run on both MAKES and misses. Don't just run on missed shots. Run at every opportunity!

  2. Spend a lot of time in practice getting the ball in bounds quickly. There are a lot of opportunities for you to fast break after made shots. You need to practice getting it in quickly.

  3. Sprint the lanes, all 94 feet.

  4. Stay wide and know your lanes. You need to work very hard at getting all five players running the lanes properly. For drills, set the players up all over the court and blow the whistle to have them get in their lanes. You can use many of these drills as conditioners that also teach them to get in their lanes.

  5. Players must get in their lanes before reaching half court. Even if you are way out of position, run straight across the court to get in your lane. This keeps players from passing the ball to guys that have bad angles or running into each other in the lanes.

  6. Get ball to point guard as quickly as possible.

  7. 4 man runs rim to rim.

  8. You should try to score within four seconds after made shots. Have your point guard run a banana cut to get the ball. If the point guard can't get it, have one of your numbered guys on the outside lanes to break back to get it. But normally you can get the ball out so quick that it's very hard to defend it with a press defense.

  9. Pass the ball ahead to open man. Look up the court. Point guard does not dribble (like some teams do). Your point guard should immediately pass ahead. Your goal is to get the ball over the top to a big man for an easy basket. If that's not there, you'll look to attack with the dribble drive or shoot the three pointer.

  10. Any time you get the ball ahead, you look to attack. If you don't have anything, you should swing the ball and get into your motion offense.

  11. Big men always run hard.

  12. Substitute big men every 4 minutes so they can run hard the whole game.

  13. The break is designed to always get a big man on weak-side rebounding position for early shots.

  14. Run transition drills every day.

  15. You could also have a couple set plays to run right after the break and then transition seamlessly into the motion offense.

"Have your point guard run a banana cut to get the ball"

Does this imply that the point guard is primarily responsible for taking the ball out on the made basket? If so i assume they inbound and then trail the fast break in the middle?

Waleed -

The idea of a FAST BREAK is to be that defense down the floor BEFORE they have a chance to set up.... therefore giving you an advantage. (at least that is the premise) IF nothing else, you get the ball operational faster and again, before the D is set.

Get the ball to the point guard quickly and is job is to get it to a wing as quickly as he can... if the wing has an advantage and can take it to the hole for and easy lay up.... thats great... IF not, he is looking for the 4 man posting up... good things happen when you get the ball inside.,.. you can score, get fouled or score and get fouled... all good.

I hope this answers your question.

thes 15 points are great but coach miles has
a luxury that most coaches in my part of the country don't have,he gets to recruit his players.
i would like to hear which lane he would put his slowest player in ?

I agree, being able to recruit the talent they want has to be good thing. Now, we who have to play who the drop off at the door is a whole different thing.

If this was me, my slowest player would be the trailer ( if it was a post player ) if it were a wing, probably the left side since most teams are right handed,...... now if you wanted to be a left handed team, then its easy, the left side.
