The Key To Attacking Ball Screens - The Starter

By using this tip to attack ball screens, you can get more open layups and shots for yourself and your team.

However, there are times that you can't even reach the ball screen. In the worst case, the defense swipes the ball from you. This tip helps you avoid this so you're not sitting on the bench.

In the video from the Attack & Counter Skill Development System, NBA skills trainer Don Kelbick explains.

As Don explains, you want to use a starter before attacking the ball screen.

By initially attacking opposite of the screen, this creates space so you can change directions to go off the ball screen.

This makes you extremely difficult to guard. It immediately puts the defender into recovery mode. Now, they are in a poor defensive position. They have to cover a lot more ground in order to defend the ball screen. You're already in a position of power.

In the video, Don Kelbick also covers some other vital tips to help you own the ball screen.

3 More Tips To Own The Ball Screen

Ball Screen Tip #1 - Change speeds and explode!

As you come off the ball screen, you change speeds. You explode off the ball screen. This forces the on-ball defender to either blast through the screener and get a foul or get caught on the screen.

Ball Screen Tip #2 - Attack with two dribbles to middle of the floor.

Next, you push the ball towards the middle of the floor with two dribbles to create space. This makes the defense cover more ground. And this breaks down the defense so you can score.

Ball Screen Tip #3 - Back up and isolate post player.

When attacking the ball screen properly, this can force the defense to switch. Mostly likely, this will be a post player that you can beat off the dribble.

Even if the big man defends your initial attack, just immediately stop. Then take a few back up dribbles towards half court and attack. That way, you can isolate the big man, make them uncomfortable by bringing them away from the hoop and attack. All of the great NBA guards do this.

Or if you see a mismatch for your teammate, this creates enough space to pass them the ball.

When it comes to ball screens, practicing these tips will make you the go-to player on your team.
