Defending Yourself While Dribbling

Hi. I remember when I was a basketballer at high school, that I would run and dribble with my right hand, and my left arm would be extended towards my defense so they couldn't come closer than my arm stretched out. Is that illegal to do that?
We see a lot of that.... and as long as it isn't too far away and you aren't bumping/pushing the defender it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure how far you are talking about but if it is a arm bar type of technique you should be fine.

We taught that for defending screens also... IF they cant get to your body you cant be screened.
