Hello,
Our season has just come to an end and as an assistant coach with my community college men's team, I have been pouring over the final season stats in an attempt to find patterns and so forth.
Our highest rated player, an undersized center, ended up with the highest ratio on the team (1.34). He averaged 7 points, 8 rebounds, shot 47% from the floor, and 54% from the free throw line.
As I go through the game film, I can't help but notice that there are many opportunities that he passes up (not aggressive at the basket) and he plays timid at times, allowing the other team to get loose balls and offensive rebounds.
My feeling is that his ratio is overstating his value. Is there anything that you could recommend that would more clearly capture the effectiveness and efficiency level at which this individual plays, given the way I have described the situation? Perhaps I am looking for a value that is not meant to be measured by the formula, but I thought I would ask your insight anyhow.
All the best,

I think what you are describing is a nuance of the game that can't be measured in an overall efficiency ratio. Although, I know that formula can be tweaked, not sure you can tweak it enough to cover what you're seeing on film though.
