hello coach:) Just played basketball this morning and i asked my father to look over me. Here are things he said on my shot. He said that I was shooting SIDE VIEW. And he said the guide hand is like under the ball :( How can i fix this? So i guess go back to b.e.e.f. again? Thanks coach and God bless :)

Not sure what he means about SIDE VIEW.... but as for the guide hand being under the ball.... go back to FORM shooting.... freeze that guide hand..... shoot 50 FORM and then do the BEEF check. Keep working at it.... you are trying to change something that you have been doing for a long time, so its going to take awhile to change the MUSCLE MEMORY.
When you are FORM shooting... bring the ball up with one hand,,, put your guide hand up there but NOT on the ball... You want it along side the ball..... So you are going to be shooting with one hand and freezing the guide hand along side the ball. Once you start with BEEF you can put the guide hand on the ball, but freeze it in the proper position.
Check the pictures on the pages I sent you and you will see what I mean.
Good luck and God Bless you too!

I would say that every sport starts with BALANCE...... IF your feet are too close together its pretty easy to get bumped, stumble whatever and lose your balance. Think of a boxers stance... feet staggered, roughly shouler width apart or a little more and drop you butt a little bit. You will see that you have great balance that way and you will be able to shoot better.... play defense better etc.
IF you are still having problems with your guide hand.. do more form shooting - you can do this with or without a ball.
Go back to those links I sent you and look at them carefully..... I think they will show you what I am talking about.

hello coach :) I would just like to ask how to do a cross over dribble. Oh by the way my shooting form is getting better but still needs more practice. When i try moving farther back its getting back on the bad way. How could i also increase arm strength? Sorry if i haven`t visited the forum for like a month, been very busy in school :) Thank you so much and God bless :)

Welcome back Carlo -
I'm glad to hear that you are taking care of school business first... that is very important, EDUCATION is very important to you being successful in life. Hope you are doing well.
Lets go back to balance for a minute... think about a boxers stance... that should help you a bit. One foot should be back towards the heel of the other foot. This is easy to work on at the free throw line. It has to become automatic when you play a game.
As for your shot getting worse as you move further back... Typically you get your strength from your legs... get more of your legs into your shot and IF that doesn't help, then you might not be ready to shoot from that distance. How far back are you talking about?
Here is a link about executing a crossover... I tried to find it on this site but couldn't - maybe Jeff or Joe could post it.

I hope these help, let us know how this goes.

Hang in there Carlo -
Don't forget that you are trying to break some bad habits and develop new MUSCLE MEMORY. :-)
Start in close, as you are getting successful, you can move back a couple of steps..... do this a little at a time until you see some success. It might take you some time, so don't worry about that... just keep working on your game.
Thanks for all the blessings, I can use that. God Bless you too.

I couldn't have explained it better.... he starts from the ground up... he talks about balance and notice that his feet are staggered a liitle bit ( like a boxers stance ) then his hand under the ball and how the ball is placed on his hand and then the follow through..... he demonstrated exactly what it means - PUTTING YOUR HAND IN THE COOKIE JAR - or INTO THE RIM. :-) When you are shooting... ( watch his follow through ) HOLD your follow through until the ball goes into the basket..
The only thing I would have added to this video is keeping your eye on the target - UNTIL THE BALL GOES IN THE RIM.......... Thats part of the B E E F package right? ( heck, he's in the pros and I coach and write LOL )
Seriously, those are the 4 parts when it comes to being a good shooter. Great find on the internet since he showed you how to do that.... go back and look at the Swish video of that boy that was shooting - you will see that he is doing the same thing.... he worked on his shot for 3 years before making that video.. it takes time to become a good shooter.... it takes A LOT OF REPETIONS to become good. The more REPS / SHOTS you take, the better you will become. The KEY is doing it correctly EVERY time - otherwise you will create bad habits.
Good luck and God Bless you too Carlo...... your welcome... I enjoy helping young people to become better players.... and giving back to the game that I loved to coach/teach. ( Coaches and Players )

Coach, i notice the 14 year old boy practicing swish and steve nash tutorial video have different follow through. So what do you think is the better? I mean where should my elbow be after i make my shot. I notice the follow through of the 14 yr old boy his follow through is like his arms is slightly forward while the follow through of steve nash in the tutorial video is like upward im sorry i cannot briefly explain. Oh by the way what do you think is better the swish 2 or the breakthrough shooting system or both of them? becuase im planning to save some money so that i could buy one of them as a christmas gift to myself :) Thank you so much coach, happy haloween and God bless :)

I thought I had answered your post this morning... it must have gotten lost in cyber space. :-)
The boy in the Swish video was working with Tom Nordland since he was 11. He seems very comfortable with that form and he is successful...
I taught the way Steve Nash shoots... actually it was from George Lehman - B E E F - we had him at our school a couple of times and the guy never misses. So, I would suggest the Breakthrough system. Tom Nordland had some nice words to say about it.
We explained like this... as you are bringing the ball up, there should be a "window" that you can look through to see the basket... that will give you the correct lift.
Happy Halloween to you too... don't eat too much candy and don't forget to save me something. :-) God Bless.
You'd think that Jeff & Joe could send me a few candy bars! Haha ...actually, they are great guys and really know their stuff. I spent this weekend with them at a Don Kelbick clinic. Now there is a guy that has endless energy and knows a lot about the technical parts of the game. He wore me out.

oh by the way coach, How could ii increase arm strength? Is it okay for my age to do some push ups ?
10/30/2012 12:16
Carlo -
At 13 there is no problem with you doing push ups - pull ups if you can find a bar to do them... and some sit ups too for that matter.
The next thing you should be doing is working on your ball handling skills... hard to play this game if you can dribble, pass and catch the ball. You might try some quickness drills also.... short bursts of speed / running from point A to point B. - Say 15 feet... back and forth.... thats more basketball related than running long distances..... although that wont hurt your conditioning too.
Just remember, as you bring the ball up, you should be able to look through that "WINDOW" as you shoot the ball.
Good luck & God Bless

IF you are getting tired to easily it sound like you are out of shape..... HOW does a 13 year old get out of shape? That always amazed me. I wasn't big on just running for the sake of running but I could play all day and not get tired. Basketball and Hockey for hours on end.
So - my suggestion here is to add this to your daily routine. Find time to run a mile a day until you feel like you are not getting tired .... do the short sprints I was telling you about. Qucik starts, stopping and sprinting back again... say 15 feet. The game is all about qucik starts - change of pace and chance of direction. I know you are going to school, so take care of that first... thats how you will be successful in life.
I didn't watch the whole video either... but it sure looks like he has a good workout routine. I would try to do those things for awhile.... I know there is only so much time in a day.... but if you are serious about playing. you will find the time to do this.

How are things going? Shot getting better? How is school these days?
Keep working on your form and your shot will take care of itself.
