Remember, you are still developing the MUSCLE MEMORY.... that takes a long time before everything that you do while shooting becomes automatic.
There were times when some of my better shooters were going thru slumps.... in games you cant practice but I told them to get themselves to the free throw line so they could concentrate on their form - that helped them to correct their shot.
As for starting your jump shot.... stay close and don't worry about jumping to high, keep this comfortable. Go back and look at the video I sent with that young boy shooting. He was pretty amazing and he wasn't jumping to high. Remember this... that boy has been working on his shot for 3 years to get it that way. Be patient and you too will get where you want to be.

When working on your jumper, try to come back down on the same spot you took off from ( Or slightly ahead )
Work on this for another week and let us know how its going. Good luck!

hello coach :) is there a way to practice form shooting without a wall or ring example if im in places that i cannot practice form shooting but i have a ball example in a bedroom. i have watched some drills about practicing form shooting while lying down. Just wanna know your opinion about it. Is it ideal to do that drill? Thank you so much and God bless :)

When I had some players who had FLAT shots I had them do what is called the "TELEPHONE BOOTH DRILL" I'm not sure where I found that drill, I'm pretty sure that I didn't devise it.
Lie on your back and shoot the ball straight up, like you are tryijng to shoot the ball out of the top of the booth and have it come straight back down to you. I have seen that work. This is just another way to work on your form.
I remember running some shooting camps for young kids and here is how we started to teach them the correct form.
1- Standing 12-15 apart with a partner.... we had them shoot the ball straight out to their partner, concentating on their form.
2- Then we went to having them shoot the ball in the air with an arc to their partner, We did this before we had them go to the baskets and run the BEEF check drill.
Hope this helps.
I think thiis helped those kids a lot since the first two parts - 1&2 had nothing to do with making a shot.

The reason I asked if you were back in school was this.... Do you have a Bball coach at your school? If you do, take some time to talk to him and ask him for some advice since he can see you and how you are shooting.
I hope all is well there and thanks for the blessings, God knows we can all use that.
Do you have a Bball team at your school and when does your season start? I'm asking this so that you can find a form that you are comfortable with and then stick with it..... you will be a better player for that. I would think that at your age you can and should make sure that your form is correct.
I was trying to help a 12 year old player who's shot was pretty good except that he used to much left hand. I was trying to change him so that his left hand was doing what it was supposed to be doing - being a guide hand. He started to work on that but his father wasn't on board with my ideas. I told the dad its not about what he is doing right now, its all about his chances to become a good high school player. I felt that he could be an excellent player in the future.
What I think he lacked more of was commitment - this is very important if you are going to be successful at anything you do in life. You seem to have that, so I think that you will be successful, just remember, this is a game, I hope you put this much effort into your academics - that is what will take you where you want to go in your life. Sorry for the "lecture/advice" - I just wanted to throw that out there for you.
Good luck

It never hurts to ask one of those coaches for a little advice, you never know, they just might take the time for you.
Why don't you try going to a couple of their practices / workouts (the varsity) - you might be able to pick up something to help YOU. Be around those players and coaches, chase down a couple of loose balls, get a ball for the coach or one of the players. They just might "adopt" you as someone they want to help.
By the way, you can practice your form without a ball.... the ball helps and certainly somewhere along the line you will need to use a ball.... but working on your form without one can help too. Take a look at those videos I sent before, then VISUALIZE yourself doing that... where that kid holds the ball, his release and follow through. Visualization can help.
I take it that the advice you are getting at home is not what you are looking for?
Good luck, God Bless and continue to work on your form, then go out, find a basket and see if things are improving.

Keep working on your form and your shot. I enjoy helping young people develop their skills when I can. I certainly don't mean it to be mean.... but sometimes its hard to get things across to people through writing... we will keep trying and you keep working on your game. :-)

Your right foot Carlo -
Go back to some of the links I sent you and take a good look at that kid shooting... and the link to correcting flaws in your shot. It really explains shooting well.
How are things going? How much time each day do you spend working on your form and then shooting at a basket?

hello coach :) I work on my form 3-5 times a week so its like 3-5 days (im doing that till my hand hurts or until i got tired). And im shooting on a basket once every 2 weeks. Well im kinda shy to join basketball games cause i dont have a nice form yet :( . I think my form is kinda better now but still got some mistakes sometimes :) I could only shoot with a nice form on a basket in 3-5 feet. Cant move farther back. So i guess needs more practice :) haha. Anyway thanks coach :) God bless :) Oh wait one more thing. Is there a wrong follow through? Or any follow through is fine?
9/12/2012 11:20
Carlo -
I would say that 5 times a week would be ok, I don't want to see your hand hurting... and by the way, you can always work on your form without a ball.
You really need to shoot at a basket more often... like daily? After you shoot 50 from shots, move to a basket and if all you can shoot is 3-5 footers, thats fine for now, but you will never get better if you don't shoot at a basket.
Shoot those short shots and once you are comfortable with your form and the results.... you can move back a few feet.
You say that shoot pretty well from 3-5 feet now, your goal should be 6-8 feet within about a week. You really need to have some lofty goals here... IF you just stay at the 3-5', you wont get better. IF you are having trouble, maybe you need to use your legs more?
There is definately a wrong way to follow through. Take a look at the links of that boy shooting the Swish method, you see that his follow through is pretty much the same every time. Your hand should finish up like you are reaching in a cookie jar :-) and you need to hold the follow through until the ball goes in the basket - your elbow on the shooting hand should be finishing around your eye/ear area.... your guide hand should be frozen with your thumb pointing back towards you. ( the guide hand should be flat - it has nothing to do with your shot - just to make sure the ball doesn't fall off the shooting hand )
Good luck

By the way - don't be shy, get out and play some games and do the best you can, remember, its supposed to be fun.
I can remember playing in pickup games at the park and at times we let the younger kids play because there wasn't enolugh older guys. One time I kept setting this little guy up for a shot but he wouldn't shoot it. I asked him why he wasn't shooting .. he said he didn't want t o miss. I told him NOT to worry, its a game, have fun and shoot the ball, thats why I'm passing it to you... and besides, you are killing my assists haha :-) He finally laughed
You wont get better if you don't play, don't worry about missing shots, even the good shooters shoot around 45%.
Heck, Pro baseball players make millions hitting around .300 (even less) .... that means they are failing 70% of the time.

Helo coach. Uhhm so you mean 50 shots as a warm up before moving to a basket? uhhm i have read in the mistakes on shooting. It says the guide hand thumb shouldnt be shooting so, when i do the shot the thumb should be sticked with the pointing finger and when i finish my shot the thumb should be pointing towards me, Am i right? Oh by the way, should i start doing jumpshots on my situation? Because when im practicing form shooting i dont actually jump but i bend my knees. Thank you so much coach:) God bless :)

Yes, 50 FORM shots and then move to a basket. As for your thumb on your guide hand.... as you bring the ball up to shoot, your guide hand should kind of freeze in that position, so you are correct. Remember, I sent you a couple of links, one with that boy shooting and the other from Breakthrough Basketball about correcting your shot. IF you go back to that one, they pretty much walk you through the process of shooting.... step by step.... take a look at that one.
When you are shooting from the block areas (3' or so) you don't need to jump, make sure you use your legs. When you move further back, 8' or so, then you can start the jump shot.
Keep working at it.
