Here’s an Excellent Video –
6 Game-Based Basketball Drills
This is a follow up to the previous post and video… A Games Approach to Teaching Basketball Skills.
As I have mentioned, I’m a huge fan of game-based learning drills. They’re fun and better simulate what actually happens in a game…
The traditional drills (ex: dribbling around cones) have their place in your practices. However the common criticism of the traditional drills is they practice things that don’t actually happen in a game. How often do you dribble around a stationary cone in a basketball game?? How often do defenders stay in the exact same spot during a game??
Game-based drills also gives you unlimited teaching moments during practice. And players love them. All this equates to better performance during their real 5on5 games.
There are hundreds of game-based drills you can use.
Here’s an excellent video giving you a few good game-based drills and ideas for skill development:
We have diagrammed and documented all the drills from the video here…
Pass Tag Drill
This is a fun passing drill that is great for warm up and teamwork. It teaches your players communication and the importance of developing a strategy.
10 In A Row Passing Drill
This drill is similar to Mike MacKay’s 10 In A Row Passing Drill. However in this version Kirby Schepp shows you different variations, teaching points, and ways to run the drill. This drill improves passing, spacing and moving without the ball. As your players get better, it will start to resemble running an offense.
Position Sealing
This is an intense and competitive drill that teaches players how to seal, improve angles, and watch the player…not the ball.
Ultimate Passing (One of my favorite drills that I use every year at every level – 2nd grade to high school)
This fun drill that improves passing, spacing, footwork, decision making, cutting and moving without the ball.
Half Court Ball Movement (Another favorite)
This drill teaches passing and movement. Your players will learn ball reversals and how to attack the paint with a pass.
Gate Dribbling (Another drill I really like)
This competitive drill doubles as both a dribbling and defensive 1-on-1 drill.
