Basketball Post Moves & Skills: Drop Step Counter

Two Post Moves Demonstrated in the Video:

  1. Drop Step Towards Baseline, Inside Pivot, Jump Shot

  2. Drop Step Towards Middle, Inside Pivot, Jump Shot

The drop step, inside pivot, jump shot is a great counter-move to the Drop Step. After you have done a couple of drop steps, the defender may start to anticipate it. That's when you counter it with the drop step, inside pivot, jump shot. The more you keep the defender guessing, the easier it will be for you to put pressure on the defense.

How to Drop Step Towards the Baseline, Inside Pivot, Jump Shot
  • Plant your inside foot as the pivot foot and
  • As you receive the pass, drop step towards the goal with your outside leg.
  • Instead of taking that extra step to complete the lay up, Inside (Reverse) pivot so that you are squared to the hoop and pull up for the shot.
How to Drop Step towards the Middle, Inside Pivot, Jump Shot
  • Plant your outside foot as the pivot foot and
  • As you receive the pass, drop step towards the goal with your inside leg.
  • Instead of taking that extra step to complete the lay up, Inside (Reverse) pivot so that you are squared to the hoop and pull up for the shot.

Tips:

React to the Defense - If the player does not drop back, blow right by with the drop step. If the defender backs off, inside (reverse) pivot and shoot.

Don't Rush the Shot - Don't take an off balance or a shot that you don't feel comfortable with. Kick the ball out and re-post if you need to. You'll find that a lot of defenders relax for a brief second when you pass the ball back out to a perimeter player. This is an opportune time to gain great post position.

Good fundamental move.

its called a jab step though not a drop step isnt it.
a drop step is when you have ur back to the basket and you take 1 step towards the basket hooking your foot around the defenders and then you take a drible and go up and finish?

Good observation, Ryan. You are correct, the player does a jab step (fake drop step), the reverse pivots into the shot.

The title might of thrown you off. It is a counter-move to the drop step.

You can perform a drop-step without dribbling. Take a look at this video: http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/drills/drop-step.html

A drop step that is percieved on this video is a drop step. Their are two different drop step moves. Both without a dribble preferably.

I purchased the Low Post Move e-book and was wondering if you have a DVD with all the low post moves? That would be great. Please send me an e-mail with the price if it is available. Thank you.

Ed, as of now, we do not have any video available. However, in the next few months, we will be releasing Don's Attack and Counter Skill Development System which will have plenty of post and perimeter drills.
