They are also high intensity so the players have a lot of fun competing against one another.

Drill #1 - Shadow Rebounding

Overview

Shadow Rebounding is a great drill because it helps instill the proper rebounding techniques through repetition of the drill. During this drill the players will be crashing the boards from all directions and angles of the floor, it is important to put the proper form into the person and box them out.

Instructions

  1. Offense will line up along one line of the free throw lane, defense will line up along the other.

  2. Coach will be behind the defense.

  3. Before the coach yells go, the coach will point which direction he wants the offense to go.

  4. The defense won't know which direction the offense is going because their back will be to the coach.

  1. Whichever way the coach wants the offense to go, the defense will sprint to the person they are guarding and will make contact with them. The defense will then ride out the offensive player.

  2. Coach can make them go three to four times switching up which direction he wants the offense to go.

  3. Offense & defense can switch, so both groups go.

Key Takeaways

  • Always make contact first.
  • If your defender crashes to the right, then step into them with your right foot and right fore arm to push them out.
  • If your defender crashes to the left, then step into them with your left foot and left fore arm to push them out.

Drill #2 - Bull in the Ring

Overview

The Bull in the Ring drill emphasizes the importance of making contact AND using the defenders bottom to push the offense out.

Instructions

  2. The coach will be at the top of the key.

  3. Coach will yell 'shot'.

  4. Right away the offense can try to get the basketball that is on the ground.

  5. The defense must try to box out the offensive player for three seconds until they can go after the ball.

Key Takeaways

  • When the shot goes up make sure you frist initiate contact with the offense, push them out with your bottom while keeping your hands up to get the ball if it comes to you.
  • Smaller players need a low center of gravity to avoid being pushed easily.

Instructions

  1. Either X1 or X2 can start with the basketball; the player with the ball can pass to either 1 or 2.

  2. If X1 throws the ball to 1, X1 will sprint to 1 and will contest the shot with high hands; X1 will then box out 1.

  3. When X1 throws the ball to 1; X2 will sprint to 2 and will immediately box out 2.

  4. 1 and 2 are looking to crash the glass and get the rebound.
