Advanced Tactic To Defend Great Shooters
On Down Screens

In the Man To Man Defense Video, Jim Huber discusses an advanced variation for down screens on how to defend your opponent’s best shooter.

By staying in the “hip pocket” and trailing the shooter through the screen.

Instead of going “ball side” around the screen, the defender will follow the shooter and fight through the screen.

The defender guarding the screener will “bump” the shooter out of the curl and force the player out. This “bump” gives the shooter’s defender time to fight through and recover on the shooter.

The screener’s defender would bump the shooter out and recover to their player.

Emphasis Points:

  • Meet the shooter with a firm forearm and be down in a good stance and ready to move.

  • Make sure the bumper and hip pocket defender are communicating.

  • If they aren’t talking, they are in trouble. ELO (Early, Loud, Often).
