4 Drills That Turn Practice Reps Into Game Points

A few months ago, I watched a high school game where a guard scored 18 points… without taking more than two dribbles on any possession.

The Block To Wing Shooting & Scoring Drills

Progression #1: Back Pivot Shot: Build Footwork and Shooting Rhythm

In the first progression, you start on the block, toss the ball out to the wing, sprint into a quick stop, back/reverse pivot & shoot.

How this helps you:

  • You learn to stop under control

  • You square your body with efficient footwork.

  • You simulate receiving a pass off a cut or screen.

  • You train momentum toward the basket, not fading away

Back pivots can be awkward at first because your momentum goes backward, not forward. Focus on “sticking your feet,” getting balanced, and driving your energy toward the rim.

Key Points:

  • Shoot from the appropriate range

  • Alternate pivoting on your right and left feet.


Progression #2: Chest-to-Chest Counter: Attack the Closeout, Then Change Direction

Once defenders start taking away your shot, you need a counter.

In this variation:

  1. Toss it out

  2. Quick stop → think shot

  3. Imagine your defender closes chest-to-chest, and pump fake.

  4. Attack, but then simulate getting cut off

  5. Change direction with a dribble move, then finish at the rim.

This teaches you to:

  • Sell your shot with good footwork

  • Take the direct line when it’s open.

  • Change direction when the defender cuts you off chest to chest

  • Finish creatively (floaters, reverse layups, etc.)

Don’t dribble to dribble — dribble because the defense takes away your shot. This drill builds that exact read.

Key Points:

  • Vary your finishes

  • Vary your dribble moves

  • Pump fake keys: ball to chin; butt down, eyes on rim

  • Alternate attacking right and left

Progression #3: Chest-to-Middle Pull-Up: Create Space for a One-Dribble Jumper

In the third variation, you start the same way as progression #2. However, you can’t get all the way to the rim, so you counter to the middle pull-up.

Why this is so important: The pull-up jumper is dying in basketball… but it’s still one of the best weapons against hard closeouts and aggressive defenders. The more varied your game, the easier it is to score.

  • Hard rip throughs

  • Footwork off the catch

  • Pound dribble into space

  • Balanced, controlled pull-up in the lane

If you want to score more efficiently, master this shot.

  • Vary your finishes

  • Vary your dribble moves

  • Alternate attacking right and left

Progression #4: Random Game-Like Progression: The Ultimate Decision-Making Drill

The final version ties everything together.

You throw the ball to different spots every time. You must instantly decide whether to:

  • Shoot

  • Attack baseline or middle

  • One-dribble pull-up

  • Change direction into a finish.

This is where your game really grows. No two reps are the same, just like in a real game. This is an excellent example of random practice. Random practice has been shown to translate better to game performance. You’re forced to make decisions, adjust footwork, and apply multiple skills under realistic pressure.

This is the difference between “workout players” and actual hoopers. Game situations aren’t predictable — your training shouldn’t be either.
