Greece - Box Set Post Play

Categories: Offense (Team)
Ages: High School+

Summary:

Here is a simple, yet very effective play taken from Lason Perkins' Encyclopedia of the Box Offense that Greece has used in International competition to get an easy basket down low.

Personnel:

1 - Ballhandler and post-entry passer.
2 - Wing
3 - Screener.
4 - Post player.
5 - Screener and passer.

Instructions

  • 2 cuts to the wing.
  • 1 passes to 2.
  • 5 screens for 1.
  • 1 cuts off the screen to the block.
  • 2 looks for 1 for the first scoring option.
  • If the pass is not open to 1, 5 pops out and 2 passes to 5.
  • On the pass to 5, 4 screens for 1.
  • When 5 passes to 1, 3 sets a cross screen for 4.
  • 1 dribbles to the wing to create a better passing angle.

Even though this drill said High School level+, my assistant coach and I decided to see if our 2nd grade (2-7 year olds and 9-8 year olds) team could master this play. We worked with them on this play at practice on Friday, Saturday they wanted to run it. They ran this play effectively 75-80% of the time and when they didn't run it correctly, they managed to figure out a way to make it work and scored EVERY time they ran it. I guess my point is that it never hurts to try a play with your team, even if the level is above where they are. It gives them something to strive for and if it doesn't work, then drop it. With some more fine tuning, I'm confident that they're success rate with this play will increase.

Nice set play. Especially nice for teams that UCLA cut the point guard. I have never seen this action and it is a good way to get a post entry with non traditional motion.

nice set play, but can this be effective against both zone and man-to-man defenses?
