3 Ball Screens to Beat a Switching Defense:

#1 Ball Screen: Step-Up

Instructions & Diagram
A step-up screen is a screen set directly in front of where the ball handler is located. It also is outside of the lane lines. The location of the step up screen is key. It gives the point guiard a driving angle to the basket in either direction.

By setting the screen directly behind the defender, the point guard can attack the hoop in either direction.

Step-up screens give the guard the option of going either direction. The diagram shows where step-up screens might be set.

Notice in both of the examples of the step-up screens, the point guard has room to attack middle or attack to the outside and still get to the hoop.

Note: Posts ALWAYS pop after setting the step up screen.

Keys for the step-up screen:

  • The post must set a tight screen but NOT an illegal screen
  • The post should pop immediately after the guard uses the screen
  • If the guard can't get to the basket, they should try to engage two defenders to get the offense started

#2 Ball Screen: Waggle

Instructions & Diagram:

A waggle screen is probably the MOST UNIQUE screening action in the Rocket Offense. It also can be the most effective screen in your arsenal when done correctly.

A waggle screen looks very much like a regular roll up screen, until the LAST second. At the last second the post player coming up to set the screen makes a quick "C" motion and switches the side that they are setting the screen on.

The guard is going to make it look like they are dribbling in one direction. As soon as the post "waggles" and makes the "C", the guard comes off the screen in the opposite direction.

Since the waggle screen looks much like a roll up screen until the last second, it can be very effective after a team has used some roll up screens in their offense.

#3 Ball Screen: Power

Instructions & Diagram:

Power is when a post goes to set any screen and then dives straight to the basket right before setting the screen or right as they are setting the screen.

Powering can be very effective against teams that hedge hard or switch ball screens.
