First Time Coach - 4th 5th Grade Girls

Well we spent just over 2 hours at the Y today.

Didn't get as far as I was hoping. We have a long way to go, but also a long time to get there.

All we did was dribbling, passing, little bit of jump stop and pivot, and some form shooting. Also had her sprint up and down the court a couple times at the end. (She tends to jog up and down the court in the games.) I don't think she is slower than the other girls anymore, it's just that she hasn't been sprinting.

She said she had fun and would do it again. I figure that's about all you can ask for, being only 2 months into her basketball "career", right?

Really wish the rec league she's in didn't use regular size balls and 10 foot rims, but can't do anything about that.

Gave her a couple of things she needs to do before games and practice. No shooting. Just keep dribbling and passing. Either with a partner or just use the wall.

Was able to talk to the other girl's Dad who wants to help out next year.

He has played in college and coached a select team for 5 years. Had to back off due to medical issues. Good experience here and a good guy. Feels like someone I can learn a lot from.

He's not sure if he wants to be the head coach next year. So I said, how about I put some things together, and you let me know if I'm on the right track or what I need to add or remove.
Sounded good to him. He already has tons of stuff he's willing to share with me

I'll kind be the "head coach" then, basically in title only, while using him for a resource.

I think it's going to work very well between us.

Attended practice tonight.

A little bit better than the last one I watched. They only stood around doing nothing for about 15 minutes of the 1 hour.

Still not showing them how to properly play defense or anything close to running an offense thou.

This is probably close to being their 10th practice of the season. So I don't see any hope of them teaching those girls defense or an offense. Just have to keep teaching my kid those things for now I guess, until I can get these girls together for some basketball "play dates" over the summer.
