Wanted to find out what some other coaches and parents feel about attending more position specific camps or clinics. In short, camps or clinics that focus on player positions. Example: Big Man/Forwards, Guards/Wing Players. I have found that there are many, many youth players who do not fully understand the position they play. As they move up the in a division they still are lacking the skills in the position they end up playing.
My goal for the winter is to put together a couple of position specific clinics to aid in this dilema.

I don't have a problem with position specific clinics, what I do have a problem with is putting youth players in specific positions. We have written about this before and have videos on our website, so I don't go in to all the details. But I believe young players should play all positions. There is nothing worse than sending a talented "big player" to the block every time down the court. This kid never has a chance to learn the dribbling and ballhandling skills he/she needs when they get older. I think everyone should play point guard. Once kids go through puberty and they get into high school, then you can start thinking about positions for them. If you work with your players and you do position specific clinics, I think all players should attend all the clinics.

There is an old saying...."The center of today might be the Point Guard of tomorrow."

Teach youth players how to play the game, not how to play a position. We ran an open post offense so EVERYONE had to know how to handle the ball, read defenses and be able to put it on the floor. JMO
