Congtatulations - you have achieved one of your goals.

I think that you have a very good work out plan but please listen to Joe and I. Don't burn yourself out by overworking..... and you risk an injury when you get tired, and as you know that will not only stop your progress but possibly create a set back. Joe suggested 3-4 days and playing some games the other days.

How about this workout every other day and either playing in some games or some light SHOOTING ONLY workout. We had a few kids that would shoot 1,000 free throws a day, IF you can get someone to feed you and use two balls, you can do that in ONE hour. That could be your light day, along with playing in some games. Those kids were 85% plus free throw shooters during the season. Late in games when they went to the line, I didn't put another player in the lane.... I had that much confidence in them. (a few coaches asked me why I did that-I told them I had that much confidence in them)

The last thing that you want is for this to turn into a JOB, this is a GAME and its supposed to be FUN. However you decide to do this.... LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. IF it tells you that you need a break, don't be afraid to take one.

Okay Coach Thank you , i appreciate all the support and help .

What your saying is that i should do this workout on Monday,Wedensday,Friday and Sunday and every other day i should shoot 1,000 Free throws and lift weights/conditioning.

How much of an improvment in my skill level could i make if i do this consistently for 90 - 100 days before i leave .

I WANT TO MAKE MYSELF A D-1 PG

p.s I also would like some help in goal setting , where i should write them , should i make a journal etc ......

I love this game coach so it could never seem like a job , i get excited by the fact that in the future all this hardwork will turn be into a player

God bless

How far you go and how much you improve is all on you. You can work out until the cows come home, and you still might not achieve your goals...... it SURE WILL HELP YOUR CHANCES THOUGH.

Here's something to consider..... you can work on all these skills and IF you CANT transfer them to game conditions, where has that got you? Thats why we are telling you to play some games too.... you have to play in order transfer those skills. I have seen a lot of practice HEROS and kid that were great in tryouts, but couldn't play a lick in game situations. The FUN is in playing.... so get some game time in.

All I see you doing is working on skills and conditioning. Ease up a bit and PLAY!

As for goals, write them down, a journal is fine.... make one copy of your goals and put it somewhere where you can see it every day. Write your goals down (other wise they are just wishes)

Ex;
1- To become the point guard of my current team. ( achieved )

2- To play well enough to be noticed by college recruiters.
3- To become a D1 point guard. ( remember, there are several levels of D1 schools )

I would think that you would be very happy to receive a scholarship to any major college.

Then THAT'S where you have to spend some time.... PLAYING ..... so you get over the jitters and become a GAMER! All the skill practice in the world cant help you IF you DON'T BELIEVE in yourself...... and then go prove it.

Your coach didn't make you the point guard because you are good looking... he did it because he believes in you, he thinks you're a player.

I had a lot of players over the years that I really liked... but they didn't get floor time unless they earned it. Good luck.

Here is an article I thought you might enjoy -

Being a basketball player does not imply merely wearing the uniform and just being a member of a squad. There are many more important phases to think about if you want to be a winner not only in basketball but in life as well. Ask yourself these questions, and answer them honestly.

1. Are you coachable? Can you take coaching? Can you take criticism without ever looking for an alibi? Are you a “know it all”? Will you always do your very best to try to improve?

2. Are you possessed with the spirit of competition which fires an intense desire to win? Does it bother you to lose?

3. Are you willing to practice or do_you want to practice? You must want to work every day with the same zeal, speed, and determination you use during a ball game. Do you have two speeds‑‑a Practice speed and a game speed? The great playes of the past were the ones who had one speed, and it was the same every day, every practice, every game. If you loaf and cheat in practice, you will loaf and cheat in a game.

4. Are you willing to make sacrifices? Conditioning to play is not fun. It is stark punishment at times. Training is exacting; the responsibility is heavy. It is rough and includes personal denials in order to remain in tiptop condition, but it has its rewards. You thrill with an inner glow that reflects a feeling of happiness when you are able to dive and save a ball from going out‑of‑bounds. The only way for you to remain in good shape is never to get out of it.

5. Do you have an ardent desire to improve? Will you practice the things you cannot do three times longer than the things you can do? Are you willing to put in long grinding hours, concentrating on a skill until you have perfected it? Are you eager to work so diligently at the skills you lack that they eventually become your strongest assets?

6. Do you have the ability to think under fire? Can you concentrate on the work to be accomplished at the moment? Can you shut out from your mind a previous failure, success, rule infraction, or personal insult in order to give undivided attention to the offensive and defensive maneuver in the here and now? Games are not won by yesterday’s score, but by what is happening now, at this moment.

7. Are you willing to be impersonal‑toward your opponent? Do you shut out all personal feelings about your opponent except to beat him as often and quickly as you can, in accordance with the rules? Our experiences have taught us that the moment a player becomes personal he plays only to release individual grievances and ceases to play basketball as a team member.

8. Are you willing to study just as hard as you did before coming out for basketball? Basketball was never meant to take the place of studies. The athletic tail must never wag the academic dog. If you must eliminate something from your schedule, it must not be study time. First things come first, and your academic growth is of paramount importance.

9. Do you believe in your school, your team, and your coach? Your school is as good as you make it. Your coach is a genuine employee of your school given the responsibility of coaching, not his team, but your team. Are you willing to work toward that spirit of oneness so that everyone possesses the feeling of belonging through their contribution? Will you keep uppermost in mind that when a coach blisters the team with criticism his remarks are never meant to be personal affronts? The only intent is to pressure you to want to correct your mistakes so that success for everyone results. Despite his scathing remarks he loves all of you as if you were his very own.

10. Will you strive daily to improve your muscular coordination and speed. Basketball is a game of movement and daily drills will tend to speed up your reaction time. Speed and coordination are necessary ingredients in a winning combination.

Finally, remember this saying: Hard work guarantees nothing, But lack of it does.

Great read Coach Sar, thanks for that

I went and watched Hartford University tonight, they played against a select team from Melbourne .
To be honest the team was terrible , They had no pure ball handler and Lacked in Size . Looking at them i know i could play D-1 ball .

As much as you think my coach thinks of me, he still doesn't believe i can play at a really high level .
E.g His got a scholarship div 2 and he wants to give to some 5'10 kid who is my age and a point guard . I honestly think he aint that much better than I'am but when i told the coach " Save that scholarship i'll be better than him and take it next year " he told me that i wont be better than him , i still have a long way to go .

On the other hand a couple of people where telling me that i should be really excited and happy for the next couple years because if i work hard i'll dominate this college dudes because they were nothing .

I just want to prove my coach wrong and make him belive i can play at that high level and to do that i need alot of game experince because thats what i'm lacking ..... i'm not a gamer yet

Bottom line is this..... YOU HAVE to be a GAMER IF you are going to play at that level.

Relax and have some fun while you are playing, stop thinking about scholarships and what level you can or cant play at. Do your very best and let the chips fall where they may.

Proving your coach wrong is a great incentive... good luck.

Well the season is over but i'm playing in a couple of strong rec leagues now so that should be helpful.

I love proving my coach wrong and i do enjoy when he tells me something i don't want to hear. People think his too harsh but really he just tells it how it is

I'll keep you updated on my situation coach Sar. Thanks for the help cha
