Our first game of the regular season and I have to admit that I blew it. We lost 46-38. Considering it was 14-6 at the end of the 1st period, we did okay the rest of the game. We were missing our 2 tallest players, so I know that had an impact.

But here is where I blew. I wanted my team to put pressure on their players bringing the ball up the court. We aren't skilled enough to run a true press, so I told my boys to play full court man to man pressure. Unfortunately they had a guard and a forward that must have scored 6-8 points each on dribble the ball the length of the floor and in for a layup.

Sure the boys should have defended it better, but at what point does the coach (that would be me) wake up and realize the full court pressure isn't working???? Good news is that I will learn from my mistake! :)

Anyone else have boneheaded coaching stories?

Are you kidding me? Do you really think you have a monoply on bad decisions or NO decisions? I'm was a boys varsity high school coach and made plenty I am sure.... the one that stands out right now was one game where one of our players was getting back doored to death. He was overplaying like he should of been.... but our help side D was NOT there.

Do you think we should have made an adjustment? OF COURSE!!!!! (still makes me mad) My assistant was an X head coach and between us we had 50+ years of experience. We took the blame for the loss, we told them that even though our D broke down we should have changed what we were doing.. sag or zone of something.

So thats just one! I have several others I am sure.... but remember, its a game, we will make mistakes just like the players and refs.... live with it, learn from it, and get better from it.

In the final seconds of the Varsity Boys summer league game, a kid(not a ball handler) stole the ball with 9 seconds left. He ran down and scored, which would have put us up by one game over. Unfortunately, I didn't think he was going to make it and called time out with 6 seconds left we turned the ball over on the "creative" inbounds play I called and we lost.

Ugh

I also got a Technical foul that same summer for pulling all my boys off the line during a foul shot to talk to them instead of burning a timeout...guess that isn't allowed.

Hey Coach: Stop beating yourself up, as Coach Sar says you don't corner the market on stupidity when it comes to poor decisions while coaching. Years ago while coaching high school basketball, we are playing the top team in the league for first place and I'm up by 2 with 4 seconds to play. I called a time out and told one of my players to foul the kid with the ball because we had a foul to give. what i didn't tell my kids was NOT to foul her if she was in the motion of shooting. Well I'm sure by now you have guessed the rest. We lost the game by one as the kid stepped up to the line and made all three shots to win the game. Now that's a bone head decision. Coach Mac

Mac,

And all this time I thought you were a perfectionist haha The longer you coach the more bonehead moves you will make... heck, just ask the people in the stands... everytime something goes wrong its the coaches fault. Thats why I retired... so I wouldn't set the record for
"Bonehead coaching mistakes.!"

I coulda been somebody!
