Hi,

I'm a new to coaching & I have 2nd, 3rd & 4th grade girls.

I need to purchase basketballs but I'm unsure of what balls to get.

I'm sure I need "age appropriate" balls but have no idea what that would be or where to purchase.

Thanks,

Coach D

Here are some cheap youth balls that are good for general use:

They are rubber but for little kids it doesn't really matter. They work fine. Get enough so each kid can have a ball in their hands in practice.

For 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders, even the youth balls can be too heavy to shoot properly for some kids. There are smaller balls but they are hard to find and when they get too small dribbling can be a little harder. Here's a chart of the different ball sizes:

Make sure you lower the rims too. Young kids just aren't strong enough to shoot with proper form.
• USE 6 FT. RIMS FOR KIDS THAT ARE 5 TO 7 YEARS OLD.
• USE 8 FT. RIMS FOR 8 AND 9 YEARS OLD.
• USE 9 FT. RIMS FOR 10 AND 11 YEAR OLDS.
• USE REGULATION FOR 12 YEAR OLDS AND UP.
