This might surprise you. But as a basketball coach, I don't spend much time on half court set plays.

Instead we focus on fundamental skills, spacing, and a free form motion offense.

However... we do spend a lot of time on baseline out of bounds plays (BLOBS) because the pay off is so big...

What The Top Coaches and CEOs Do To Be Successful

I can't tell you how many high level coaches I've heard say something to the effect of:

"If you want to win, you better be REALLY good at the things that happen often in a basketball game!!!"

I believe this to be a very important concept.

Some people refer to this as the Pareto principle (also known as the 80–20 rule, and the law of the vital few and trivial many.)

The Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. If this is true, you better spend as much time as possible focusing on the 20% (the vital few).

Along the same lines, successful business people preach a similar concept. I once heard the CEO of Dell say that every single day he prioritizes tasks and lives by the concept of "focusing on the critical few instead of the trivial many". He claims this to be a major key to his fortune and success.

How The Pareto Principle Can Help You Win More Games

This is very sound advice for any basketball coach.

You should continually prioritize and make sure you're focusing on things that will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

One area we focus on is the BLOB play (both offensively and defensively) because it happens so often in a game.

By being really good at both executing and defending BLOB plays, it could give you a 20 point swing in a game. While this is the extreme, imagine what 6 or 7 extra points in each game would do for your season.

When you think about it, having the ball on the baseline near your basket is a great place to be. The defenders have to turn their heads and defend from a position they are not used to. Not to mention you have some great offensive passing angles from this position.

Many coaches settle for just getting the ball inbounds. I believe that when you have the ball on the baseline, you should take advantage -- and your first primary objective should be to SCORE the ball.
