Why Private and Small Group Training Works So Well

Private training gives focused attention.
Your child gets individual coaching, direct feedback, and a session built around their needs.

Small groups add game-like decisions.
With 2–5 players, we can add more live decision-making, competition, passing, spacing, defense, and pressure.

More reps than a normal 5-on-5 game.
In a game, players share the ball and decision-making opportunities with nine other players. In a small group, they get far more chances to practice the exact skills they need.

Small groups allow us to add more game-like decision-making, competition, and live reads — while still giving players lots of personal coaching.

What Makes Breakthrough Basketball Training Different?

Our coaches don't just show up and run random drills. We use a proven player-development system that has been refined for decades.

Proven Training System

Our coaches use a training framework developed over 30 years and refined through working with more than 150,000 players.

Science-Based Skill Development

We use the right mix of technique work, interleaving drills, randomized drills, and game-based training so skills transfer to real games.

Coaches Trained in Our Process

You are not just hoping you get a trainer who knows what to do. Our coaches are trained, vetted, and taught to use the Breakthrough system.

A Safe, Encouraging Place to Improve

A lot of players struggle because they are afraid to make mistakes. They worry about getting yelled at, looking bad, or failing in front of other players.

Our training environment is different. We encourage players, teach through mistakes, and help them understand that mistakes are part of learning.

Players are still challenged, but they are coached in a positive way that helps them build confidence and use new skills when it matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades is this for?

This training is for players in 3rd through 12th grade.

Is this only for advanced players?

No. Private and small group training can help beginners, intermediate players, and advanced players because the sessions are customized based on the player's needs.

Is private training or small group training better?

Both are very effective. Private training gives your child the most individual attention. Small group training allows us to add more competition, decision-making, and game-like drills.

For many players, a small group of 2-5 players who are similar in size and athleticism is ideal. But if you do not have a group, private training is just as effective.

Do we need to bring our own group?

No. You can form your own group, or you can request help finding a group. Group placement depends on availability and whether we have players of similar size, age, and athleticism.

What skills will my child work on?

That depends on what they need most. Training will include shooting, ball handling, footwork, finishing, passing, defense, decision-making, basketball IQ, and confidence.

How often should my child train?

We generally recommend 1-2 times per week when possible. Plus some at-home practice is ideal (we can provide at home workout plans). Consistency leads to better results.

Where are sessions held?

Sessions are available in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City / Coralville, and Mount Vernon. Specific location options will be coordinated after you fill out the form.

Can parents watch?

Yes, parents can watch.

Does my child need to bring a basketball?

Players are welcome to bring a basketball, but we can provide one if needed.

What is the cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 12 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session.

Do you offer basketball training near Cedar Rapids?

Yes. Breakthrough Basketball offers private and small group basketball training for players in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City / Coralville, and Mount Vernon. Availability depends on the schedule, location, and the type of training you are looking for.

Is this the same as private basketball lessons?

Yes. Some families call it private basketball training, private basketball lessons, or working with a basketball trainer. Our sessions are customized based on the player's age, skill level, goals, and areas for improvement.

What is the difference between a basketball trainer and a basketball coach?

A basketball trainer usually focuses on skill development, while a basketball coach may also focus on team systems, strategy, and game roles. Our trainers combine both approaches by teaching skills, decision-making, confidence, and game application.
