Lead Instructor - Darrick Matthews


Darrick Matthews is the current head coach of the women's basketball team at Southern Arkansas University. In his first season, he led the team to a conference tournament appearance, coaching a 2nd Team All-Conference player, an Elite Scholar, and three Commissioner Honor Roll athletes.

Previously, Matthews was at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), where he guided the Drovers to a SAC Regular-Season Championship in 2018 and earned the SAC Coach of the Year award. Under his leadership, the team produced one SAC Player of the Year, four SAC Defensive Players of the Year, one SAC Newcomer of the Year, four SAC All-Tournament selections, 20 All-SAC selections, and nine NAIA All-American selections. The Drovers also made five NAIA National Championship appearances during his tenure.

At Southwestern Christian University (SCU), Matthews coached the women's team to a fourth-place finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I National Tournament. Before this role, he spent two seasons as the men's assistant coach, where he helped develop Tyler Inman, the 2013 NAIA Dunk Champion and future Harlem Globetrotter.

Matthews' coaching career began as an assistant women's basketball coach at Sul Ross State University (Texas) under former USAO coach Jennifer Hayden. He also served as an assistant coach at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas.

As a player, Matthews started his collegiate career at Oklahoma Christian University in 2007 before transferring to the University of the Southwest (N.M.). During his sophomore season at USW, he led the Mustangs with 19.4 points per game and earned first-team all-Red River Conference honors. He concluded his playing career at McMurry University (Texas) in 2009-10, helping the War Hawks to an ASC title.

Matthews graduated magna cum laude from McMurry in 2011 with a B.S. in mathematics education and a minor in curriculum instruction. He later earned an M.Ed. with an emphasis in physical education from Sul Ross State University in 2012.
