Who is Carl Scales?

Coach Carl Scales has been a valued member of Breakthrough Basketball camps for over a decade, bringing energy, experience, and a passion for player development to every session. With more than 20 years of coaching experience, Carl has worked at both the high school and AAU/travel levels, helping players and teams reach new levels of success.

High School Coaching Experience

Carl has contributed to several successful high school programs in Minnesota:

• Hopkins High School (Girls Varsity Assistant, 2000–2005)
Helped lead the program to four consecutive state tournament appearances, including the school’s first-ever state championship in 2004

• Eastview High School (Boys Varsity Assistant, 2006–2012)
Reached four section finals and advanced to the state tournament in 2010 and 2012

• Hill-Murray School (Boys Varsity Assistant, 2023–2025)
Coached teams that ranked among the top 15 defensive units in Minnesota Class 3A in back-to-back seasons

• Tartan High School (Boys Varsity Assistant, 2025–2026)
Helped guide the program to its first section title in 14 years and a third-place finish at the state tournament with a 31–1 record

AAU and Travel Basketball

Carl has spent 15 years as a head coach at the AAU and travel level, working with both boys and girls programs, including MN Metro Stars, MN Fury, MN Magic, and Richfield Select, while also serving as an assistant with MN Heat. His experience has helped many players elevate their game and compete at higher levels.

Breakthrough Basketball Experience

Carl has been a Breakthrough lead coach since 2015 and currently serves as a Skills and Leadership Clinician, as well as a Curriculum Development Consultant. He also directed summer camps and clinics for the Richfield Boys Basketball Association from 2012 to 2016.

Coaching Style and Player Development

Carl has helped develop numerous players who have gone on to compete at the college level, from Division I to NAIA. He is known for his clear communication, attention to detail, and ability to break down the game in a way players can understand and apply. His energetic and challenging coaching style creates an environment where players are pushed to improve while still enjoying the process.
