That's because you get...

  • Breakthrough coaches are hand-picked and go through a rigorous coaching development program to ensure that you receive elite coaching and instruction.
They are also monitored and reviewed to ensure they’re providing the highest quality of service for you.
  • Safe Environment - Background Checks and First Aid Certification!
  • Our lead instructors have thorough background checks and are required to be First Aid Certified. That way, you have a safe environment for training.
  • Character Development - Excel In Life Off the Court Too!
  • While we're serious about developing better players, we also believe that you should teach young athletes how to succeed on and off the court. So you will see that character development and life lessons are a core tenet of the Breakthrough Training Academy.
Here is a thorough explanation of how we accomplish the best environment for basketball training...

A Breakdown Of Our Skill Sessions - Is This Better And More Affordable Than Private Training Lessons?

Private training lessons definitely serve a purpose. However, if you solely do private training without training in a competitive, group environment, you're probably doing yourself a disservice.
You might be wondering if playing on a team would serve that role. We explain below why we don't believe it does.
Here's why we believe the Breakthrough Training Academy environment is the best for long-term development:
Each session is broken down into 3 components:
1 - 1v0 Skills Training (Personalized feedback like in private training)
2 - 1v1 Skills Training (Ideal for better game play)
3 - Small Sided Games (Better IQ and team play)
Now, let me explain why this is vital for your skill development!
  • Personalized Instruction and Feedback
  • We structure the training format, so each person gets individual attention and feedback from the expert coach... just like you do in private training.
Within our 1v0 skills training breakdowns, the coaches will monitor each player and give them specific instructions for them to improve.
"Isiah, get your chest up for better balance."
"Drop your hips quickly on the catch, Sarah."
  • Develop Confidence and Comfort
  • Also, when you introduce new skills without defenders, it allows players to build confidence and comfort in the new skill.
However, if this is the only way that you train, you’re going to be in for a big shock when it's game time!
When defenders are added in the actual game, your moves won’t be as effective. And you won't make nearly as many shots. You might even be a subpar shooter compared to your teammates even though you look great in workouts.
That leads to our next point...
  • Better Game Performance With Transferable Skills
  • Making shots and highly effective scoring moves against defenders is a learned skill. This takes hundreds and thousands of repetitions against live defenders to get REALLY good at it.
This is why many players look great in practice, but struggle to transfer that to better game play.
And that's why we believe 1v1 drills where the offensive player is practicing against a live defender is vital!
The beauty of 1v1 drills is that there is nobody there to bail you out. You can't quickly pass the ball away and shy away in the corner.
You have to learn to attack, shoot, dribble, and score against a defender.
Now, to fill out the skill development pie, you also need to learn how to integrate your skills into a team setting with passing and high IQ play...
  • Improved Basketball IQ and Decision Making
  • Each training session will also include Small-Sided Games against live defenders. This results in better team play.
This can include 2v2, 3v3 and other advantage/disadvantage situations such as 2v1, 3v2, and 2v3.
So now players learn important team concepts that will make them shine when they go to play for their teams.
Within a team setting, they'll learn when to attack or shoot, when to pass, how to move without the ball, and even how to get their teammates open.
All things that don’t show up in the statbook, but coaches absolutely love and will give you more playing time for.
  • Dominate All Types of Players
  • Another big benefit of training in a group setting is that you compete against different skill levels and different sizes of players. Each player has different strengths.
This forces you to develop a skill set that beats ALL types of players.
It doesn't matter if your opponents are short, tall and long, quick, or strong.
At times, you’ll be playing against a short, quick player who can make it difficult for you to attack the basket off the dribble. So you’ll be forced to develop scoring moves in the post area.
Other times, you’ll be playing against a long, smooth athlete who might be difficult to score against in the post. So you might want to drag them out the perimeter area to negate their strengths.
And the same goes for defense.
  • A Stress-Free Environment Optimal For Improvement
  • To be blunt, when you strictly play for your team, you’re always trying to impress your coach. It's also rare for coaches to give players time in practice to push their limits and make mistakes.
So by training in this environment where Breakthrough coaches encourage you to push your limits and make mistakes, you exceed your current skill set.
Getting better can look sloppy and messy at times and that’s okay.
That's the only way you learn to develop a quick crossover move that leaves the defender in the dust.
That's the only way you learn how to sprint into a shot, so you can create more shots during games.
That's the only way you can test out new scoring moves in the paint that you might not be great at YET, but soon will be with enough repetitions.

Summary Of Why This Is The Best Training Environment!

  • Players build confidence and comfort in the new skill without defenders present.
  • Coaches provide personalized feedback within drills.
  • 1v1 drills teach players how to apply skills against a live defender.
  • Small-sided games teach players how to apply skills in a team setting.
  • Decision making and basketball IQ improves within the 2v1, 2v2, 3v3, 3v2 drills.
  • It's a stress free environment where players can experiment and push their limits. There are plenty of mistakes, but players thrive and improve!

The Best Value For Basketball Training Out There!

We also believe this provides the best value for basketball training out there.
When you strictly do private training, it lacks well-rounded development as explained above, and it can get quite expensive.
So you get a little extra cash in your pocket for fun activities while accelerating your child's basketball development in an optimal training environment.

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

How does billing work?

To reserve your first month, immediate payment is required. You will not be charged again for the 2nd month of training until the same day of the next month.
Your first charge is now. Your second charge is the following month.

Are these sessions beneficial for everybody, regardless of position?

Yes! This training is meant to develop you into a multi-threat scorer. It doesn't matter if you play point guard or in the post. This type of playing is ideal for you.
Today's trend is to develop the "position less" player. This means that every player has the skill set to play any position on the basketball floor. Think Michael Jordan. Think Kevin Durant. Think Breanna Stewart. Think Caitlin Clark.
Every coach wants 5 players who can handle the ball on the floor. Ideally, 5 point guards.
Every coach wants 5 players who can score in the post against a weaker defender.
Every coach wants 5 players who can pass.
Every coach wants 5 players who can finish in traffic.
Every coach wants 5 players who are confident and play well in a team setting.
That is the point of the Breakthrough Basketball Training Academy!
To develop great all-around players like the current greats Diana Taurasi, Jayson Tatum, Breanna Stewart, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and the past greats like Michael Jordan, Maya Moore, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and many others.
Don't get me wrong. There is a difference in developing your skills and utilizing your strengths during games. However, we recommend that you do both. That way, you become the Swiss army knife of basketball.

I have a really advanced skill set for my age. What if other players in the group aren't as advanced as me? Will this affect my development?

This type of training would still be great for you. As long as you push yourself outside your comfort zone (which the instructors will help you do!), these drills are set up so you can improve as a player no matter who is around you.
We do have game-like drills for every session, but you only need 1 to 2 other people out of the entire group with a similar skill set to be challenged. To ensure this, get your friends to sign up as well!

Are you ready for this level of training?

Typically, if you work hard and have the right attitude, you will do great.
Even if you’re behind other players currently, the right work ethic and attitude will get you caught up to the other participants in a short time!

Why do I need more skill development? Aren’t team practices and games enough?

If your child loves the game of basketball and wants to excel, the short answer is no. That’s why we developed this training.
This is a big reason that parents and players have been begging us for this service over the years.
Due to the flaws in the youth basketball system, it can be very difficult for a coach to fit everything into a practice when they only have 2 to 5 hours of practice every week.
From a team perspective, they need to develop or teach...
  • A zone offense. (Sometimes multiple ones against a 1-3-1 zone, 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, etc.)
  • A man to man offense.
  • A defense.
  • Out of bounds plays.
  • A press breaker (Sometimes different based on the type of press.)
Now any person who has coached in this situation, knows how difficult it is to fit all of this into a team practice.
And what gets neglected? Possibly, the most important thing that will advance your child to the next level.
Skill Development!
It may sound obvious… but if you are a better shooter, ball handler, passer, finisher, etc., you will be a better basketball player.
However, these are often the things that are not put into team practices because of the immediate pressure to compete.
Even for people like me who have a full-time job coaching/teaching basketball, I struggle fitting this into our team practices.
I actually made a decision that the first 1/3 to 1/2 of basketball practice was going to be skill development… nothing else.
This helps greatly, but it’s not enough if you want to excel.
And there can be another issue… even if the coach does include skill development… which leads to our next question.

Why Do You Only Offer Two Sessions Per Week?

Quite simply. If your child needs you to consistently have them workout with a trainer, you are probably wasting your money.
We look at this as guided training… similar to music lessons.
Your child needs to show the drive to practice outside of training.
There is nothing wrong with just doing one or two weekly training sessions to continue improvement. That way, when you feel they are ready to get more serious, they have a great foundation.
However, if you feel like you need to force your child to work out… it’s going to have the opposite effect.
It will burn them out and make them not want to participate and even quit the sport altogether. It’s human nature to not want to do what you’re forced to do and want what you can’t have.
So if anything, you might try removing sports as a discipline tool. It might make them want to do it more.

Do The Training Sessions Vary?

Yes. The training sessions will vary, so you can continue to challenge yourself and develop different skills, so you become a complete player.
This also improves motivation and prevents things from getting stale. This will enable you to have continuous improvement throughout the year.

Why Do You Limit Spots For The Training Sessions?

We want to maximize repetitions and provide personal instruction, so everybody improves!
We limit spots based on the number of baskets available on the court and the number of coaches.
