Horns Set Play - Loop

This play is very helpful in our team.It is a matter of practice so that we can execute well on the actual game.I like this play because there's a lot of screens.

I really like this play. We are a newly formed 8th grade basketball team. I agree with all the comments that keeping it simple for the youth is paramount. However, I will be introducing this option to our players, this will be a good addtion and transition into our motion offense.

As for youth players, keep things simple for them... repition is the only way to make them comfortable to run anything.

Back screens are also a very good way to get into your offense if the D is pressuring you a lot.

Mike L a good way to get into your motion offense with guys who can't handle the rock is to use a 1-4 high set to get into your motion.

You must have someone who brings the ball up the court... just have him favor the side that you want to go to.

Run this a shell drill at first... NO D.... after he gets comfortable, add a defense and have them play at half speed until he has this down.. then let the defense play ball.

There are too many chances for the multiple passes not to be completed, youth dont set good enough screens (not matter how well taught) and the timing will cause player number 4 to get a 5 second count more than likely.

There is nothing wrong with running a set to get into your motion offense... its just like another entry....

You're right Joe, you don't want to give them to many sets that would take away from the other fundamental things you need to work on.

Every team and players are different ... we do what works best for our individual situation .. sometimes we have to adjust our philosophy, even with younger kids.

And, by the way, this is a great play.... a couple of simple options to get you a quick shot, then into motion.

Mike, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm coaching a group of pretty good 8th graders and we just run a similar high ball screen play to the A-set and motion. I ran a 2nd play, but I feel like that might even be too much.

I don't like to add anything else, because it takes away from skill work, defense, and motion concepts.

I'm using Horns this year with my eighth graders, then we do four out motion after the first two cuts. The variation above is too sophisticated for them. We have a great high post ball handler at 4 and lots of 2 guards who love to cut.....but nobody who can dribble to the wing and see the floor. Any ideas?
