Developing Coaches and Camp Instruction
Since joining Breakthrough Basketball in 2013, Jim has helped prepare coaches to lead camps, teach the curriculum, and communicate effectively with players and parents. His mentoring continues after coaches begin leading camps. He follows up on their experiences, reviews feedback and surveys, and works with them on challenges and opportunities to improve.
Jim works with Dustin Pierson and the Breakthrough Basketball team to continually improve camp curriculum and instructional resources, helping coaches understand what to teach and how to teach it effectively Feedback from coaches working in the gyms helps shape those decisions and the instructional resources used to support them.
His Breakthrough instructional work includes Man to Man Defense, The Youth Coaching System, Shooting & Scoring System, Next Level Finishing Moves, and Beginner Basketball for Ages 5–9.
Coaching Players Today
Jim remains regularly involved in practices, skill-development workouts, games, and tournaments. Most of his current hands-on coaching is with fifth- through tenth-grade players at 4D Hoops in the Kansas City area.
He develops practice plans, leads sessions, and coaches alongside members of his staff. As director, he also mentors his coaching staff and oversees the program's basketball philosophy, curriculum, and player-development experience.
Jim has also led developmental workouts and programs for children in approximately first through fourth grade. With younger and beginning players, he emphasizes simple instruction, sound fundamentals, and helping children enjoy learning. Across ability levels, he values effort, character, coachability, and a willingness to improve.
A Background Spanning Youth and Elite Basketball
Jim's coaching experience includes assistant and head coaching roles at Avila University and an assistant coaching position at UMKC. He helped build and develop MOKAN Basketball in its earlier stages, including expanding its programming for third- through eighth-grade players in 2010.
His coaching accomplishments include:
- Leading a team to first place at the 2013 Nike Global Challenge.
- Coaching at the Nike Elite 100 Camp.
- Coaching MOKAN's 17U team to a Nike Peach Jam berth.
- Coaching teams to 45 championships, 13 runner-up finishes, and 26 Final Four appearances in regional and national tournaments.
Jim has coached and developed athletes who went on to play college and professional basketball, including NBA players and players at programs such as Duke and Kentucky.
Teaching the Game and Developing the Person
Jim's approach is centered on teaching players how to play the game rather than simply teaching them plays. He develops positionless players who understand spacing, cutting, screening, passing, movement without the ball, and how to read the defense and make decisions.
He combines those concepts with the individual skills players need, including shooting, finishing, footwork, ball handling, playing with pace and control, and individual and team man-to-man defense.
His goal is to prepare players to enter high school with a strong skill foundation, basketball IQ, an understanding of how to play on both ends of the floor, and the ability to contribute as coachable, competitive teammates.
That preparation goes beyond basketball. Jim believes basketball is more than a game. It's an opportunity to develop character, leadership, accountability, emotional intelligence, and resilience, preparing young people for success both on and off the court.
Through 4D Hoops and 4D Leaders, Jim increasingly focuses on the adults surrounding young athletes as well. He helps coaches reflect on how they communicate, handle frustration, lead young people, and hold players accountable while maintaining strong relationships.
Jim helps parents navigate youth sports, emphasizing the importance of coaches, parents, and athletes working together to create a positive, supportive environment that puts the long-term development and well-being of young people first. His perspective comes from decades of teaching players, working with families, developing coaches, and building and running basketball programs.
After more than three decades in coaching, Jim believes youth sports can be one of the most powerful environments for developing young people when coaches, parents, and athletes work together with the right priorities. His goal is to help young people become better players while preparing them to succeed well beyond the basketball court.
